Reed started feeding her natural insecurities (that she wasn't a valuable member of the team, that she wasn't smart enough for Reed, that he cared more about science than her) to break the mental control.
It isn't like Reed slapped her just because he was having a bad day. He did it because it is something he would never normally do and he knew it would help jar her out of the mental control. When it did just that, he immediately apologized. Reed slapped Susan to help her get her free will back.
Not the same situation as the one with Hank and Janet at all. I agree with you in principle, but this example doesn't help your case at all.
