Let's be honest, unless Gohan becomes the innovating genius that defines a generation by exceeding all previous iterations of scientists, he's never going to reach a tenth of his potential of how much he could help others as a fighter.
Can you imagine how gutting that must feel for Goku? To have a child that reaches all of your expectations, looks at it, and says 'nah, I'm going to read books'.
This isn't even acknowledging all the people Gohan has personally befriended and saved as a Z fighter. Would Krillin still be alive if Piccolo didn't force Gohan to train? Would Piccolo and Vegeta if Gohan decided to let Krillin deal with it? Perhaps he'd feel better if Cell had just murdered his planet, and all his friends, after all there's noone to point out your cowardly running from responsibility when everyone is dead.
In fact, if Gohan had trained properly, would Buu have even been a threat? The only reason Goku couldn't smash him is because he's a durable little bugger.
Whatever. Just remember, everytime Goku gets his ass kicked, or was unable to save someone, Gohan could have prevented it.
