>>96936052ave never dropped the comedy part of the action-comedy equation, even at his best Toriyama couldn't actually make the way the basic fighting actually played out interesting, he was great at coming up with weird new powers and ridiculous techniques inspired by old kung fu movies for his characters to bust out.
Goku VS. Piccolo Jr. is visually the exact same shit as this with the fucking flurries of punches and the "going so fast we're zipping in and out of sight" bullshit and it's a thousand times better, mainly because Goku actually has to improvise. There are actual stakes, both sides get the upper hand at different points, there's tension beyond the hollow "this planet is going to blow up in five minutes/thirty chapters/fifteen episodes from now".
