>pic relatedNow Shen occasionally manages this (the one where a winter personification is going to beat the guy up comes to mind), but more often he's just saying 'Life sucks'. Usually, he doesn't even get more specific than 'life is hard, he's tired, he's afraid he's going to be called out, he's afraid of failure, etc.', which almost feels like he's someone who wants to complain, but hasn't nothing to really complain about. Read most of the panels, you can usually guess what the last one is, because his whole schtick is 'pretending' he's a functional adult.
Whomp takes familiar concerns (being overweight, being awkward, weird idiosyncrasies) and ramps it up to eleven. A brief embarrassing moment? Ronnie's so awkward, he has a list of places he can never go to again. Have to wear unflattering clothing? Everything Ronnie wears turns into Hawaiian shirts. It's a familiar problem with a twist at the end, and I think that's where Whomp is superior. Read all but the last panel of a Whomp strip, and it's hard to predict exactly what's going to happen.
>tl;dr Shen: This is sure a problem that happens! I'm such a loser!>Ronnie: This is sure a problem that happens! I'd better leave town, fake my death and never speak to anyone again.
