SJ's ending was like if in one of those romantic comedies, the main character ends up with the bitchy, vain, trendy girl who he's chasing at the beginning, instead of the underdog, plucky, cute childhood friend who's always been there for him.

Because in the heat of the moment he has no idea how time travel works. Who knows if by changing the past he changed the future, or if he just created an alternate timeline? The only reason why we're confirmed that changing the past changed that future is because of Ashi's death which puts a fine point on the fact that the future is forever changed now.
