Deviating from what is normal, standard or expected is not inherently a good thing.
Many of the standard conventions of storytelling have become common and endured for centuries or even millennia because they work the best.
The heroes defeat the villains because the audience is more sympathetic to the heroes' cause and becomes emotionally invested in their success.
The male and female leads typically end up together or experience some kind of romantic/sexual tension because they are the two characters the audience is most familiar with and sympathetic towards, and by the nature of writing character interactions they must have some kind of workable chemistry that makes the time they spend together onscreen appealing to the audience.
Clichés are when these standard story elements are badly executed, when things happen just because they are expected to happen, without the story's author taking the time to properly set them up for the audience.
The story of Star and Marco's relationship is only halfway told, but regardless of the outcome is has been anything but cliché.
