I honestly really like the series, but my God I hate when they fucking tease you with interesting plot episodes and then they return to townie episodes, ignoring pretty much everything that happened.

Like, we just saw the Homeworld, the Diamonds are super pissed off, Lars is literally dead, the citizens of Beach City were almost kidnapped by aliens and now we get an episode about... the fucking Pizza Family?

(most) people dont give a fuck about the townie episodes anymore and would prolly just skip it. Thats what i did last season as I did not know SU droped another bomb. Townie episodes were nice and fun in the first season or two, magic meets mundane that kind of jazz but now its just annoying as the real good stuff has been shown already. Star VS I feel did better in that regard.

But that is not SU ONLY problem though.

I tried to address the townie episodes on r/stevenuniverse (inb4 "your first problem was going to reddit idiot") and I got a bunch of hate replies (I even recall getting some from their resident moderators). Apparently the immature rabid fanbase doesn't just reside in tumblr.

I agree, hiatus makes it much worse, but the townie episodes are still a huge problem.
In season 1 and 2 they were important to build up the world, also they were pretty funny and enjoyable.

But now, with all the way more interesting stuff going on, nobody gives a shit anymore about them.
And that's the problem: you can't have episodes with big plot twist, important events and lore, and then just switch to boring normal life episodes when it looks like the recent events didn't even have an impact of the characters.

For example, one of the best use of townie episodes mixed with plot episodes is the Week of Sardonyx.

That's a lie an you know it. The build up to the diamonds discovering Steven was just them suing him inside a black void with 2 lawyers. The one bit of homeworld we saw was a few seconds long and the only thing that didn't look like a mess was that white diamond silhouette.

Didn't want to get spoiled by the leaks, but does it at least look like we'll have an episode that isn't from Steven's point of view? All the Space Adventure episodes so far have been a lot of fun, and it feels awful to be forced back to Earth so quickly. Especially since we're supposed to be in the heart of things now.

I know Sugar has this big obsession of mixing a big plot with a simple, small-town setting, but is it that hard to just move the more supposedly slow-paced episodes into space? Just turn it into

Have Lars dodging Homeworld security one episode, then follow that up with a bit more of a humorous episode like, I dunno, Lars trying to get around Homeworld by pretending to be a gem. All the low-tension Sugar craves without the mind-numbing, creatively bankrupt Beach City setting, which would perfectly fit a 10 minute format.

I wish these people were more competent at mixing things up a little instead of trying to do a format they've clearly been incapable of doing since Ian left.

I haven't watched the show since season 1, but this sounds like stuff that'd happen in one of those sci-fi live action shows where they don't have the technology or budget to show off the fantastical elements and it a lot of it has to be implied or transpire offscreen.

But Steven Universe is a fucking cartoon, you can draw and do anything. No excuse.

you know what this show needs?

a 4 episode special where steven, through warp pad accident, goes to a parallel universe. in this universe, Rose's transformation into steven fails. Leaving Rose a seemingly dead gem. Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst have managed, but it is a dark awful timeline. Steven fixes some of what goes wrong. Manages to reboot Rose and finally get to talk to his mom. Then gets sent back to his universe, having given hope to that universe.
