Okay, I would like to throw my coin into the well here. Kurt was an idol of mine when I was 11 - 15, or 16'ish. I remember listening to one of his songs before I even knew what Nirvana was, and I loved it. Although, was Nirvana really a mind blowing band? Not necessarily. What they were was something different, something a lot of kids, including myself, could connect too. The music? It's great stuff, but I wouldn't call it revolutionary. A lot of what was on "Nevermind" was simple enough that I learned the chords by ear, especially "Polly." What made them a big thing was being relatable and different. No, I'm not saying the music wasn't good, it was honestly pretty awesome, and still is in my opinion. For me, someone who has probably gone a little too deep into Cobain lore, I found that he isn't someone who should look up too, but one who you can have a better chance at relating with. All in all, pretty great music, but I can't look at the man himself the same way I did when I was a teen.
