Episode sucked.
Specifically, the animation and voice acting aren't bad, but there's no creativity in scenery and the writing is VERY phoned in
So let's start with the plot "Two characters are very competitive, and people complain about it. They get trapped in a haunted game with two other characters where whoever loses has bad things happen. One is bad at game and loses, then another does not play and loses. Then at the end, when protagonist is about to win, she realises she is too competitive and stops competing, and that reverses everything for no reason". ...So yeah, not what I'd call original. At all.
So what about non-plot writing? Character-to-character moments, odd jokes, general creativity, that sort of thing. Well this had... none of them. The number of jokes could be written on one hand (and they're not funny), most of the episode is spent between the two animacorns and in this one they're written almost identically so there's no interesting character dialogues, and the creativity goes as far as "When Dr. Fox got cursed in the corn maze, she turned into... corn".
Finally, as for scenery and props? There's... nothing. I don't just mean "Nothing to do with Lego", I mean there's just nothing. Everything except the characters are as bland as bland can be. Hell, even the haunted mansion interior consists entirely of one diagonal set of really long stairs. And I checked for hidden details or background gags too - couldn't find a single one. The buildings in the intro are the most creative background elements in the entire show.
And what's really sad is that this is coming from The Lego Movie, which was all about creative scenery!
But on the good sides: voice acting is good enough, and the animations are better than a lot of other shows (looking at you, Loud House). The Lego elements come across surprisingly well for what clearly isn't trying to be Lego.
That being said: it's just the first episode, so maybe it improves?
