How the hell did this piece of shit show get 5 seasons and 2 movies? All the characters are horrible! The "dumb" characters are two-dimensional caricatures of actual people and all the "smart" characters are smug pretentious assholes. What was ever the appeal of this?

I agree with you for the most part. People here will go on about how it's actually supposed to be about Daria realizing she's the closed minded one, but elements of that don't appear until later and the bulk of the characters just continue to be the cynical stereotypes they're put in as. The show isn't as smart as it is clever.

This is one of the most solid spin-offs as far as cartoons go. Can't think of too many more that were as successful.

I like how the show evolves from viewing Daria and Jane as the only sensible people in a world full of idiots to later seasons showing them as unlikable assholes who are intentionally rude to others who are genuinely friendly towards them and lead happier lives despite them.

You actually see all that pretentiousness work against them as the story progresses and you begin to like every other character in the show instead.
