Blade runner is quite simply not a normie movie. The trailers looked really cool, and that was about it. They gave no details about the plot or why anyone who didn't love the first blade runner should go see it. They forgot that the original blade runner was a loss too, and only later became famous because of the genre and aesthetic it inspired. Also, it's long as shit, and doesn't make nearly as much sense if you hadn't seen the original, so that's yet more time commitment for someone who doesn't have much reason to care about the movie in the first place.

it's the same thing that happened with dredd. Amazing movie if you like the source, complete pass if you haven't.

Ah, you know, Blade Runner 2049 was a good movie but it's not the type of thing that seems like it would have a lot of mass appeal. It's a bit long and slow and pretty bleak. I don't think that many people can get into something like that. I mean, Batman v Superman failed for much the same reasons.. and that one had Batman and Superman.

Something like MLP 9n the other hand is just a simple movie for kids that also has a large adult fanbase. Two birds with one stone. I also imagine it wasn't very expensive.
