it works, but a bottle isn't going to hit a head and then go straight up, it's going to go careening off. so what you want to do is draw circles coming from where it hit showing that it spun as it ricocheted
technically the same is almost certainly true of his head

is THAT why the first one looks so weirdly... foggy and drab. I didn't realize it conciously but now that you've said it, yeah, black lines work much better here. Keeps things from getting muddled. It's a poster, after all.
Colored lines are wonderful for some things, especially materials that should seem softer or less opaque (hair, especially light-colored hair comes to mind)
honestly when I switch back and forth between these two it just looks like the outlines get thicker, and that is an improvement

Love the blue
lower text is readable but the outlines are kind of thick relative to the letters. I'm not sure how it would affect readability if they were changed. Darker wouldn't hurt though. Maybe only darker on the parts sitting in front of characters.

oh also another typo I see, it's Frisbee not frisby
now technically the Wham-O! toy company would have you believe that they own the trademark to Frisbee, but that's ludicrous for a number of reasons. For one thing you can't trademark a person's name. For another, they stole the name (and the toy) from the Frisby Pie Company whose pie tins were the original throwing-item of choice.
The idea that this also required the change of Mrs Frisby to Brisby is stupid for all those reasons plus the fact that the book already got away with it.

Only small changes I would make is change the saturated blue color on the shirt from the frisbee guy. It skews with the depth of the image to have the only strong saturated color in the far background whereis all the colors in the foreground are very desaturated. Also, you can use a mixture of black lines for the foreground characters and the slightly lighter lines for the ones in the far back. Again, creates more depth.

I love the helmet man joke.

There's also something entirely down to taste: it might be more funny if helmet man literally does nothing but wear a helmet. I think the spinning-on-helmet thing is pretty quirky, so even if you go the "he just wears a helmet" route it could be fun to keep it in.

I'm not a big fan of the "fifth headshot" joke, because it seems to break the flow of the larger helmet-man skit. Also, you've kinda already set up the police as villains by having them shoot a guy for wearing a helmet.

I think it's good. The jokes are funny, and the pacing is fast.

But, although I do think it's very good, I also think it's a copycat. In style, not jokes. It reminds me a hell of a lot of a fair few manga. The author's good enough to develop their own style eventually.

Final Version. I boldened the lines for the foreground players. Added softer blue lines for the background characters, saturated the whole thing a bit and added a little gradient to the shirts.

Snickered lightly, but I feel like it could have been condensed down to two panels in a larger comic with more of a point. Not that this kind of humor isn't also good. Something really amusing about their two faces being all that shows (at countertop level) and being so close to each other. If purple's face in the last panel was a little more worried, I think that would seal the deal.
It's weird how these threads have changed my standards and made me think about pacing and condensation

It's about drawing with Ink in October. If you don't normally use ink, then now's the time to try it, and challenge yourself. Like a lot of people I'm mostly digital nowadays, but I'll be doing Inktober again, and trying to slow down my inking to improve the lines I make. I'll use this as an opportunity to try and learn how to use my brush pens properly.

I believe the "ink" part is about committing to making a line without undoing it, or erasing it, or otherwise going back and trying it over and over until it's just right. Be bold, make a mark and keep it.

Inktober IS all about the ink; it doesn't matter what you draw, as long as it's in ink and takes place in October.

Drawlloween, on the other hand, is specifically halloween-themed, but doesn't specify a medium. You could combine them both and do the Drawlloween challenges in ink.
(I'm doing Drawlloween but digitally.)

Yeah seems the challenge is quite flexible in those regards. I still do traditional inking though just for the hell of it, and because otherwise this ink I used just one semester in college will dry alone.

I'm still working on my webcomic I guess, but I feel like the critical period to get it noticed in a substantial way has passed by.

If you're not part of the pre-established twitter cliques already it feels like the current atmosphere for webcomic artists means there's zero chance for you these days. Until the next big thing comes around, that whole culture of artists getting fanart and guest comics seems like it's over and that makes me feel kind of sad that I didn't manage to get my work out when Homestuck was still big and webcomics were all the rage again, for a while.

I like that the stones at the far back are almost entirely white, but the stones at the end incorporate shadows. what inspired you to do that, a scene you saw in real life or another artwork?

Anyway, as a whole it looks like it was done by an amateur.... I would probably start by practice drawing shrubs or grass.

it looks to me like the greenery was done with a texture brush, one which is kind of obvious in the upclose bushes, and kind of inappropriate in the rear hills because it makes the grass look three feet deep but totally uniform. The brush used for the clouds is fantastic though, and the fade of the background hills, along with the overall perspective, tells me this isn't all that amateur. Then again the gold planks look like wood, if it's meant to be the famous yellow BRICK road, bricks aren't usually that long, right?

There are a few ways of going about it, but usually you can get away with just sparsely drawing tufts every so often, and letting them represent the entire glade, in the same way that a few scattered freckly dots can represent a sand texture

No. If you want your webcomic to be noticed you have to draw both your webcomic AND rule 34 of it. I can not repeat my enough about this, it's a must.
People always ask for source when they like porn and connect A LOT with the characters when they them getting fucked, so all you have to do is add a simple link to your work in the image and done, you have a bunch of new followers who will read your webcomic while waiting for you to draw more porn.
Do you think those incredibly detailed loli images featuring obscure characters from an obscure anime are made for no reason? Those artist are smart and are shilling that manga/anime for money or because it's their manga.

Yeah I agree is a bit inconvenient. I mean tumblr let's you "follow" tags, but it is a messy system still, more so if the tags are not that specific. Also it is on the whole tumblr site so if you can't follow the tag on a single blog, yeah. My tag is a bit too specific at least so I think I don't have a problem there. Yet.

Y'know, when I'm done with this M&P story, I'm going to upload the rough draft for it. I wrote it between classes and never cleaned it up after I finished, but I used it as a rough outline for the comic. I didn't follow it to the letter, but it served as a framework for the fight with the beast and its minions, as well as the conversation between the Merchant and Pike.

There are some minor differences, like how some of the minions die. Some major ones, like the beast originally having four legs and two eyes and Pike having a Halberd instead. Also, Pike has an inner dialogue as well.

I had a story comic and though I had a few readers, fanart and guest comics were nil.
Then I did some dumb simple joke comic and fanart and guest comics popped up.
Don't do a comic only to get fanart, draw what you want, but certain types of comics will inspire fanart more than others.

I was practicing drawing my hands and face for a bit, but jeez, my brain's kind of stuck in a kind of lucid autopilot mode right now. I kind of see my flaws a bit better. I mostly rely on lineart, I pretty much always start with lineart, and sometimes leave it at that, which doesn't really help me capture the depth of my hands. My fingers are normally just "phoned-in", they're just vague scribbles depicting to some extent where the fingers are, and if they're stretched out or not, they almost never capture of two fingers are subtly overlapping. Anyway, I have some ideas to improve my drawings for tomorrow. I'm going to "colour-in" the shadows first, instead of starting with any line work, so I can think about depth more, and so I don't accidentally go into autopilot mode and draw the same shitty scribbles of hands I've done thousands of times before.

It's the space between your panels, but in that page there doesn't seem to be any. Including some space between your panels will make the page easier to read - it helps with the flow.

I notice you like using a lot of diagonals to separate the scenes in your page - is there a reason why you did this? I can't help but feel it makes the scene of the butterfly picking up the scene too dynamic, when I think it should be a little more serene.

No particular reason other than I don't want the panels to look too boring, but maybe I should save that idea for more interesting scenes. It is meant to be a serene scene so having more square panels might help convey that idea.

Just a nitpick, but butterflies' feet are not down at the end of their abdomen. It might read more clearly if the insect lands on the pebble with the middle of its body, then the legs are visibly more outstretched as it lifts off. that and shadows will make it clear when the pebble has cleared the ground

I got an idea for a bunch of trickster gods like Coyote, Anasi, and Raven during the 1930's golden age of cartoons influencing the minds of animators to turn themselves into cartoons because they want to be the first gods honored in the new surreal medium of cartoons.

So you get Snaps the Coyote, Andy Spider, and Ronald Raven as the hip new cartoon characters in cinemas and the resident Doc Savage expy Doc Steel realizes something is wrong because his culture mathematics predicted that succesful cartoon characters would either be prey species or domesticated species-rabbits, dogs, cats, mice, etc. Not predators.

The tricksters have started to create a little surreal cartoon universe to inhabit where this time they get to be the creators and skyfathers and finally get to be on top for a change. But they fail to realize that by becoming skyfathers they're leaving their trickster roots behind and becoming straight men in a cartoon universe...

Enter a little cartoon justice league of not-Popeye, not-Felix, not-Betty Boop, and not-Fleisher Superman to constantly frustrate them and let them know what its like to go up against tricksters like themselves.

try desaturating the road, too much saturation can be a bad thing, especially when you have these warm and cool colors drastically clashing against each other in such a way. However, if you want you can use the color of the road sparingly as accents, like with dandelions or something, to lead the eye how you want and make the composition more interesting. See if you can mix some light blue here and there in the road, since clear skies tend to reflect blue onto surfaces. Lastly, I'm really getting the sense of strong sunlight, so push your values harder on the rocks and in between the crevices on the road.

Oh, you were specifically trying to paint the yellow brick road from the movie. You're right, the road itself is very saturated, but even googling "the wizard of oz" images, you can find some semblance of harmony. In the first relevant example I found, everything in this picture is colored with an orange glow to it, there is a sense of unity because it stays withing a palette. In some of the movie screenshots I found, the road is usually the most vibrant part of the scene, while everything else not so much, so it automatically captures the attention of the viewer. In your painting everything is equally vibrant, the foreground and the background feel like they're competing for attention

What would be an appropriate "proof of concept" and length for a webcomic? I know that TV pilots and animation have to get the full premise across with a unique hook and resolution, but constricting everything to about 20-30 pages to keep the reader interested enough to warrant donating money sounds really tricky.

Maybe a few pages of "one-off" gags mixed with a handfup dedicated to a small arc and resolution?

Usually it's just a cover and some character art.

Every other (important) character is on the backburner for ideas and writing, since I figured it'd be a while before I could naturally introduce them. The arcs are generally connected by one-off creatures of no consiquence. Some very minor characters include:

>Athena. A stoic monk that lives in the woods.
>Chupacabro. Marie's pet chupacabra that loves chewing on Morgan's hair.
>Sister Abby. Devout nun that operates a church in Witchway.
>Stanley. Distressed coffee shop owner haunted by ghosts.
>Deborah. A banshee cursed to stay trapped in Witchway until Milly or Morgan can break it.

That's all for general descriptions and synopsis. The writing I've got done so far covers about 30-pages or so, which I'm working to tighten and add more to over the next month.

So yeah, that's all the pages I got done so far. Since page 13 isn't done yet, I'll just go ahead and say that Jack's new partner is his younger and just as butch sister Mackenzie who was in jail a couple years back after an incident where she ran through a freeway being drunk and caused one of the biggest traffic accidents in recent history. Despite having a criminal record, she's still trusted to actually work as a Licensed Crimefighter.

The grass or shrubs needs more work, but they look nice. Your clouds are pretty great, but you could add more in the background. The rocks look too smooth, and they need more shading and variety. When you draw stone roads, you should start from the far off point, then work your way back.

Siad hills, however, now look quite flat. It would be a good idea to give them the same amount of shading that the hills behind them and the shrubs ahead of them have.
Also, by my eye, the plane established by the road ought to continue visibly out behind the shrubs.. unless it's one of those roads like in my neck of the woods that are built kind of elevated so water washes off of it . Right? like it looks like the flat ground should intersect with those far hills.

I always start with the foreground objects because it's much easier to draw something behind something than it is to draw it in front, overlapping.

yeah, that's what I meant. I'd say it depends on what you're drawing. Like paved roads and a natural landscape is easier to start at the vanishing point, but building and enclosed spaces you start at the foreground.

I kind of just skipped past it since it doesn't look like my thing. The only thing I fave to say, is that your linework looks janky, like you drew with the zoom level at 66%. I would try to make the lines look straight so it at least looks professional. And also look at comics/cartoons/visual art with minimalist artstyles for inspiration (like Maus I guess, or maybe more stylised art Adventure Time or Mickey Mouse, that sort of stuff)

Our two worlds become fused, even the moon gets intersected with theirs. (still haven't decided how the inhabitants of the other world would look).
The bulk of the story would be exploration of this new half of the world, and finding out what happened and if it can ever be reversed, so that our main characters can reunite with their lost daughter.

Maybe later on I could write the story from the perspective of the girl.

if you draw a line around the globe you find out its hard for it to go through interesting places, I originally wanted it to basically take africa, the middle east most of india and australia, to make some commentary on immigration, but its not easy to make it fit. At least not on google earth

I'm talking in general.
I've read a lot (well I've checked out a lot, rarely can I stick with them for long) of webcomics and the average quality for them is just so sad, especially since the art on average isn't that particularly bad, it's such a waste of time and resources.

The indie comic scene in the west could become as successful and respectable as the scene over in Asia, but artist in the west are just too arrogant. I mean Japanese are as arrogant as it fucking gets, and even they more often than not will work with an artist when they recognize their talents lie in drawing, not writing.

This isn't to say you can't do both, plenty of examples exist, but the average artist isn't at that level. For every writer who can't draw, there is an artist who can't write.

You're right, it would be more poetic than literal. A speck can be tiny, it can't really be brief, but in terms of the ocean spanning "forever", the speck only goes pretty briefly then it's over.

ah, floating head syndrome. I suggest a neck. I know it feels weird but after drawing many a floating head, I've come to the conclusion that it's your only choice if the hair drapes down behind. Like maybe you can use shading to make that part clear, but not on black hair obviously. Also, the back of the hair seems to be pointing forward rather than hanging straight down.
In this style you aren't really going to be able to tell genders by anatomy, so I don't really have any suggestions other than that

Thanks you. Hands and feet used to drive me nuts, the same as all other artists it seems. For a while I had a solid split, where comic characters had n64 polygon extremities and more realistic drawings I'd just draw from the very few poses I could do reliably by coping them (DBZ taught me some good fist poses). It took me a long while to really get behind the anatomy of phalanges, but by god I eventually got it. The big breakthrough really was being able to visualize the gumdroplike shape of a heel, the pillowlike shape of a palm, and the i dont know what the fuck you call the shape of the terminal phalanx of fingers and toes but it's a bugger til you wrap your brain around it. Anyone who's still hiding hands in pockets and feet cut off by the bottom of the canvas, just know that if I can do it, you can. And probably in a fraction of the time it took me

By the way what do you think of that plot line? To be more specific, his mom is a huge pedophile, she loves having sex with little boys but she's also very paranoid so she murders the boys and hides the bodies. One day she got pregnant by one of those boys, she didn't abort because the fetus was the only thing stopping the dad of the boy he murdered from killing her, so the main character was born.
For some very good reasons explained in the next 2 or 3 pages, the blonde kid starts living with them so her dark desires raise again.

You want to keep this kind of thing light-hearted so we laugh through the black comedy of a rapist mom. It's possible to do all that with a grin but you'll be grinning pretty hard, might hurt your teeth. If there's a flashback, the idea of her being pregnant being what kept our protagonist's grandpa from killing her is a fine idea, but you don't have to add that she was about to kill the wee lad.
It also helps that she is a hot anime mom.
