I liked the season premiere, Pickle Rick, Ricklantis Mixup, and Morty's Mindblowers. The other episodes were either mediocre or new lows for the series, IMO.

Also, it's the season finale and the shitty marriage drama has overtaken the show so they won't have it end on that nothing plot. Rick confronting the president is going to be Rick against evil Morty, and the Obama meme president plot with be a few minutes at the beginning and include at least one drumpf joke. Mark my words.

Pickle Rick was okay. This was hot garbage compared to everything that's come before. Beth feels like some kind of mary sue that just kind of lucked into being like Rick. And while Rick is a total gary stu at times, he's entertaining and it's clever. His ability to solve every problem and know everything was part of his shitty charm. Beth just seems like a shitty person at her core.

Tv shows are storytelling and an art form just like music, movies or books. I think this episode was awful, I cannot think of a single joke that landed and the pacing is just awful, too crammed and no breathing room for the emotional scenes it's attempting.

Yeah, she bailed, it's obvious she bailed because Rick spelled it out that she doesn't have to care about anything, she's smart, she's above consequences and she can do whatever the fuck she wants and if it gets too much for her she can come back and resume her life with no problems whatsoever, do you really think Beth has the compassion to give a fuck about someone else? I thought the pacing was pretty bad. It moved from plot point to plot point while trying to be self referencial and emotional with it's scenes but it just didn't flow in a cohesive way. I guess in this new age of entertainment people are children and can't have two seconds without science gadgets or a loud sound to keep them invested but just compare this episode to something like the early Simpsons before they got awful. They grew to be the biggest show of their area because they treated their characters like real people with clear motivations and had the subtly to let emotional moments sink in. Here, they're trying to make the point that Beth is not happy with who she is and is blaming Rick. That can be a good setup but it never really resonates. The jokes and dialogue are really starting to be dated with it's references. It is falling into the same trap of "just because we acknowledge that it is a deux ex machina it makes it funny and clever". Rick and Morty works when they aren't trying to tackle divorce plot lines or Rick's relationship with Beth. They really hit the nail with Rick and Morty's relationship and the rest of the cast just falls really short.

The further out I get from it the less angry I am. There were actually some funny bits but the writing of the Beth segment felt off in a way that's hard to describe. Jerry's bit was about as bad, but I expect Jerry to be the writers' butt monkey and as soon as he called the kids racist I knew what was coming.

There wasn't a single thing about this episode that was unique or witty or even fucked with your head in the way Rick & Morty, as poopy and farty and terry foldy as it is, is capable of doing when they actually apply themselves instead of coddling people who are little more than fans of the show pretending to be writers.

And that, dear anon, is why this episode sucked. It might be the worst of the series.

Yeah nah, that was a genuinely bad episode. Like, I can't think of another episode that I felt was actually, genuinely bad, but this one was really poor. The episode as a whole was overly self-aware to the point of being obnoxious, and both plotlines hinged on serious contrivances either suddenly saddling characters with new, previously unmentioned back story (apparently Beth was really fucked up as a kid) or relying on characterization that the show had been progressing from (Jerry being a spineless piece of garbage). Granted, with Jerry the idea is that he's slowly getting better but then he's handed a lampshaded deus ex machina and effectively gets out of the situation no better or worse than before, which is honestly just cheap. Then the idea that Beth is more like Rick than she'd care to admit is neat and represents a good space for character development, but it was also super hamfisted and only there to have Rick go on a smugass, college freshman-tier existentialist spiel about how it kinda sucks to be any kind of intelligent. It honestly felt like the writers were indulging in the kind of herp derp 2deep4you horseshit that idiots on Reddit spew about the show instead of actually being smart like they've proven they can be.

I thought the most interesting part of the episode was when Beth mentions Jerry among the things she's hesitant to leave behind.

That said, this season has made me hate the family as a whole. Beth, Jerry, and Summer just aren't entertaining characters when they're being used any more than "sparingly".

I don't see where you're getting the idea Jerry was shit on. He was shown to be no worse than anyone else here. If anything the character this episode shit on was Beth. I can't help but feel that this season has had the same themes and concepts in multiple episodes. It feels very repetitive. I feel like season 1 and 2 were more varied in how they tackled their plots and themes, with a lot of the episodes feeling distinct and memorable.

I agree fully. I believe there needs to be a foil to Rick, be it some primordial force that becomes more apparent, or Evil-Morty. However we've seen little of evil-Morty and that barely constitutes a conflict, just an evil waiting to occur.
The most simple and everpresent of conflicts, Man v.s. Nature (or in this case, the universe) is being shit on because Rick is too strong.

It makes his entire experience trivial and even for a comedy show, his lack of enthusiasm makes him less a main character and more an outlet for other plots to sprout from. All the other characters have struggles, and needs, and wants; but anything Rick desires is handed to him by the universe and his own hand. It's just so DULL.

It's not that she's as smart as Rick, she's just smart, which we already knew since she's a surgeon. It's no like a horse is so much less complicated than a person anatomy wise. Lots of vet schools are more competitive than regular med schools.

Jerry was never actually sexist or racist or anything. He was trying to get back at Beth which was shitty and his new girlfriend was doing the same thing trying to get back at her boyfriend making them the same. Meanwhile Beth tried to murder an innocent kid and robbed him of his childhood, nearly killing his dad as well. It also turned out she's some kind of sadistic psychopath who ran around stabbing people and other horrible shit as a child. I can't believe you're acting like this episode shat on Jerry when he was shown doing a totally normal and human thing while Beth turned out the be Charles Manson or some shit who maybe just ditched everybody to run off getting wasted across the universe like her dad. And the female alien character was literally exactly as "bad" as Jerry.

Making Jerry pathetic again was a misstep however and it would be funnier or at least more interesting if he would succeed.

That's a normal response to an actual alien, though. If Morty and Beth think it's sexist the joke is just that Rick dragging them around has totally warped their perception of what's normal, not that Jerry is actually racist. I guess it's just that you're supposed to date someone because you actually want to date them, not just to get back at your ex. I don't think that's that bad to do. But it is kind of using the other person. In this case they seemed to imply he just wanted revenge on Beth and didn't like the alien woman and that she was doing the same to him. Ok, so I understood the "beta male" label on Jerry because he fucking lied to the alien lady and blamed his kids, because he was too afraid to be a man and admit that he couldn't be with her because of how tiring all of the hunting was getting, all because he knew she would try to kill him. Jerry tends to have a theme of surviving because he chose survival over principles, ethics, or courage.
But the sexist and racist parts I don't exactly get? He bragged about her having three tits and two vaginas, which she was in the room for and clearly took as a compliment. I think Summer was trying to say, if you date a girl for their body, that is sexist? If so, I would say she used the wrong term. Doing that is called being selfish and immature. Jerry's not bad at all. His discomfort with a bizarre creature from another planet is totally normal and relatable. What's funny is him pretending to be cool with something that's clearly weird. What's weird to both Jerry and the audience isn't weird to Morty and Summer anymore thanks to Rick constantly dragging them around the Universe and fucking up their minds. So Jerry is trying to show his fucked up kids that he's "cool" with weird shit too. FInding space monsters odd looking is just normal.

Beth was shown to abandon a little kid to die in some weird zone on purpose. The show also implies she runs around stabbing people because she gets off on it. As a result of her actions a man is almost wrongly executed for the death of his own son. In the end she doesn't even save the kid she fucked up in the first place, she takes the easy way out, and the show strongly implies she abandons her entire family. That's a billion times worse than anything we've ever seen Jerry do. The show definitely views Rick as the ultimate villain in all of this and they're having it more and more be that Beth is as terrible as her father in some ways. Jerry is compared to them a pretty good though flawed guy. Even Summer and Morty are shown as being more evil than Jerry. Maybe because everyone with Rick's genes is kind of evil or at least fucked up.

The whole point of the Mad Max episode was that Summer was being just like her grandpa Rick, trying to avoid her real problems (her parents' divorce) by being avoidant and distracting herself with stupid adventures. The show is also showing Beth as being more like her Dad Rick now. She also sees the appeal of fucking off from her responsibilities and life doing ultimately dumb shit as a distraction. It's the same thing as her and Rick's alcoholism: a childish escape. And Summer was doing the same immature, stupid thing.

The weird thing this season is really doing is shitting on its female characters, showing Beth and Summer to be absolutely terrible people. You guys just don't realize that the show is saying they are bad and wants you to think that they are bad in spite of being incredibly heavy handed about how bad the female characters are.

That happens when you get female writers. They become desperate to show the girl characters just as flawed as men characters so as to overcompensate for the Mary Sue archetype that they overdo it.

It was even said in previous interviews that the writing team started shifting a lot of focus on Beth and Summer. Them also getting a new crew of women writers is not coincidence. They want a female Rick because they think it'll add to the grand scheme library of memorable girl characters or something and want to make up for decades of the token "cool perfect" girl we've had in media.

Are we shifting the goalpost already? Noticing a wasted opportunity for Rick to finally have some sense of conflict is the same as asking for his downfall? Excuse me for wanting your Mary Sue to have any sense of a repercussion for his actions. I never even said it was bad that Rick is an immoral character, but it's annoying as fuck when he's the only one who is never being depicted negatively, despite the writers saying "he's not supposed to be right all the time". That's fine if the show is its wacky, comedic self, but when it's becoming this dramatic soapbox it gets old really quickly. Then when the plot finally had the chance to be interesting and add some real depth to Rick, the lazy writing just shifts the focus to Beth instead.

The way Beth and Summer are written is fine. This was the first ep I didn't like this season. I just thought the jokes weren't that funny this time. The bigger overall problem is the show's nihilism, maybe. But that's been a problem since the beginning. Nothing means anything and all of the characters are horrible people. So the audience wonders why it should care and why anything matters.

The fans are bad people. Many of the fans have sympathy for Jerry because he's mostly just been a suburban dad who got emasculated by his supergenius father-in-law and his marriage destroyed as a result in the long term. This is problematic of course because Jerry isn't supposed to be a good guy, but so far in the show between patheticness and sloth Jerry has also had moments of heroism and love for his family. Other characters like Beth have generally not gone to the same lengths for their family, or any real lengths at all. This makes Jerry look good, when he's supposed to be bad (see how many people in this thread say he did nothing wrong?)

Ergo his character must be repeatedly destroyed- first by having him backstab rick after rick offered to help him get back on his feet just because rick made a joke at his expense and now he's framed as a racist (aliens aren't a race, they're a species and more importantly racism means you actively hate people not think they look weird but who cares about definitions lol?) and a sexist. Of course there are arguments that summer's just being a bitch, but that morty agreed with her seems to indicate that that was not what was intended, at least not entirely.

Basically Jerry isn't meant to be good, the whole joke about him being pathetic got him too much sympathy so now we're going straight into mean-spirited assassination of his character to try and force fans to stop pitying Jerry for getting fucked over by Rick and Beth.

Tell me, did you laugh at all when watching the latest episode of your comedy show m? What jokes were there beyond the Family Guy tier shock humor of "lol cannibal incest babies xD"? Of course not, because the show's not trying to be comedic anymore, it's trying to be "meta" and more serious to appeal to the audience it's hooked. Rick never met Evil Morty face to face, Rick's problem was with Unity and not beta 7, he reached an impasse with the female gazorpazorps, and the therapist was preemptively given the "lol what you have to say is meaningless" monologue and then laughed at by Rick and Beth afterwards. And she didn't even put him in his place, she just gave a meta analysis of his existence. But I guess you would like the self insert therapist, wouldn't you? If these are the characters you have to list, then you've only proven my point with how shit the writing in R&M is.

If they wanted Jerry to be a bad guy then in episodes like the one where he helped Beth save that deer using her horse surgeon skills they should have just had him puss out without doing anything.

By making it so that Jerry occasionally does one good thing despite being so pathetic it offsets the fact that he is pathetic because the other characters never had moments where they did anything good or selfless- they're just dicks through and through.

The show basically has to rev up the amount of shit Jerry does in order to make him and Beth seem on equal grounds of unlikable. But when Beth is unlikable because she traps kids in an imagination world out of jealousy and murders all the beings there, Jerry REALLY needs a boost to catch up. It gets to the point where he becomes almost overly pathetic, flanderized version of season 1 "loser Jerry" just so he and Beth can seem "equal in shittiness".
