Hellboy (more pulp adventure at times, but still great)
Mnemovore (if you can find it)
Gerry Conway's recent Carnage is quite good, you just have to put up with a couple superhero cliches and a rushed ending.
There's a recently-launched series from Image called "Redlands" but only one or two issues are out so far. I've got it on order, haven't read it yet, but it looks promising.

Enrique Alcatena has horror stylings that compare well with like, Miura and Kago and Ito but overall I think this is a genre manga does far better than US comics. Harrow County is a fun book at least.

Hack/Slash is not horror at all. It's a parody of/love letter to slasher flicks most of which are bad and can hardly be considered horror but have some semblance of bad movie charm. The comic captures that perfectly.

Honestly it has to do more with like Victorian literature as a whole than with Lovecraft specifically. This sounds like a pretentious answer, but the book is constantly drawing on early 1900s art, culture and history. If you must read some lovecraft it's helpful to have read Beyond the Walls of Sleep, Shadow Over Innsmouth and Dumwich Horror.

This actually got me back into zombies recently. Loving it so far. The overly brutal nature of the Crossed gives the entire series a really good atmosphere where you're constantly reminded that there is an army of relatively smart serial killers out to torture you to death for hours or make you one themselves through horrible rape.

I don't think Japan does it "better" per-say but I think American comics Horror is more about the viscera and the aesthetic. It's more indulgent in camp and more invested in reveling in what a horror "feels like" moreso than what it makes the reader "feel like".

Lovecraftian horror has two sides to it: the incomprehensible horror side and the mythos side. For me, incomprehensibility isn't equal to horror (I think this is more of a cultural thing with Westerners who value their individuality more). I like the mythos side of Lovecraftian horror, how such incomprehensible beings would organize. I also like the doomy athmosphere of many of these stories, especially Providence, where the protagonists are so fucked it doesn't matter anymore (which can be kind of liberating).

But for some people, having no significance in the universe is a nightmare and that is what the Lovecraftian horror represents.

As for Providence, Moore took whatever subtlety of horror Lovecraft had in his works and replaced it with something more overt which doesn't sit well with me at all.

When genre fiction is more about introspection with messages about cultural and social consciousness and not bound by formula, it transcends the local boundaries and becomes genuine. Only those kinds of genre fiction should be indulged into unironically. Horror is like lowest of the low and only concerned with instigating basic human sensory. All that said I've read a lot of things that have been recommended in here that are good for what they are, you could read them instead of trying to start a dick measuring contest. Read Wytches, Moore's Swamp Thing (stops being horror after a while), Hellblazer, some EC stuff for starters.

The other side of American horror comics seeming so sparse is that a vast, vast majority of them are written as short miniseries or one-shots, and rarely get collected. There's also the fact that most anything that isn't Superhero shit is lucky to sell 10,000 copies. There's a lot of great stuff in some guys longbox or shelf somewhere, but unless you got to snag it as it came out, lots of good western horror comics verge on being lost media.

Most comics are "genre" fiction so unless you're out here reading Chris Ware, and Fantagraphics shit exclusively I don't think anyone on this board can shit on genre fiction. Try Black Hole, Delphine and Ghost and ruins for more experimental stuff, Black Hole is the best. Try Archie horror series and American Vampire for more pulpy stuff and try anything by Mignola because of the art.

I don't mean to sound like a huge stank bitch --these stories might be very good for all I know-- but goddamn I get so frustrated when I get recommendations for horror comics but I can tell right away from the imagery thats it's not going to scare me. Comic books shouldn't just be "write a story and slap some art on it quickly." These teams need to figure out how to storyboard, essentially, to get the mood right. They need to use techniques and think about angles and lighting and shadows and coloring more.

But that's enough rambling. Just needed to get that off my chest.

That's fair. The standards of paneling and layout that artists in America tend to learn is geared towards action scenes and big splashes, but it doesn't work as well for mood.

Go look up Global Frequency. It's a sci-fi series that often takes a technology or idea, and ramps up the possible consequences to the most horrific possible end. It may work better for you.

EC comics were the first popular series of horror comics in the 50's.
the story i posted is very influenced by Lovecraft's short story called "The Outsider".

Emily Carroll's art is definitely no realistic, so some people may find it harder to empathize with the people as depicted. But the concepts and moody presentation of it all is phenomenal, so once you get over the stylistic hurdle and start digesting everything else, it's very good. If you like the loose, cartoonesque presentation, then it sucks you right in.

Art style is probably one of the most make or break aspects of pretty much any /co/ material, sure there are some things that people can agree is objectively bad but for the most part it's extremely subjective.

I see Grant Morrison's Nameless has already been mentioned, I'd also recommend Annihilator. It does get dangerously close to capeshit towards the end but it definitely has strong horror elements throughout.

Charles Burns' Black Hole and Last Look. Not sure if these would be considered full on horror but they are disturbing for sure.

I saw someone mention Beautiful Darkness and I second this one very strongly.

Scariest comic I've read was this little indie graphic novel, collection of short stories.

I don't remember the name, but the last story was about this incredibly poor guy who got a temp job cleaning out these abandoned ruins with a crew, and he's stuck there after they leave, as he's out of gas.

This childlike ghost berates him for being a failure as a man and a father, and tells him how horribly they're going to rape, torture and murder his family.

The last panel is him staring at his hungry looking family, the ghost just behind him, smiling and saying "Fun starts now."

Not a comic, but still /co/ - Fear(s) of the Dark has some excellent animated horror shorts in it. There's a few stinkers, but there's also some very unsettling, disturbing, and creepy shorts. The last short in particular is especially well done

Basically a collection of short stories with occasional continuations. A small percentage of them are just odd things. The author either commenting on something unusual, or trying to make you second guess yourself. A slightly larger percentage are his attempt at being scary, but it coming off as comical.

But then there are chapters are are unsettling. I don't know if it's really horror or not, but it gives a weird, paranoid feeling of wanting to hide away from an unseen threat.

I was too busy trying to follow the plot of Nameless to be scared. Call me stupid but I read the whole thing and don't have a fucking clue if the narrative is even linear or follows any kind of structure whatsoever.

I love keeping up with Morison and I usually re-read his stuff but he's gotta keep on foot in our mental plane or at least tell me what concepts I need to wikipedia if I want to even understand his story.

Depends on what you like?
Slasher stuff or certain horror movie franchises? Pretty much all have had comic runs. Even Gingerdead Man (it was okay).
Creeping unsettling horror that feels like a campfire short story? Plenty of good webcomics that do that (top recommendation always Em Carrol).
Artistic fantasy that may not scare but has horror elements? Always around (Witch Doctor is my favorite comic).

And as always the golden age horror comics are always fun toilet sit reading such as most EC titles as well as the copycats like tomb of Terror or black cat tales or anything slightly spooky titled in the 1940s.

The biggest problem with all of horror media is how deceptively simple it is. That simplicity attracts lazy hacks and amateurs (this is most evident in zombie and slasher subgenres, but present in the entirety of the genre as well). And the fact that the movies are relatively cheap to make doesn't help with keeping those amateurs out. I'm not saying that following conventions is inherently bad and you should make every single work like Cabin in the Woods or Trick'r'Treat or that the genre itself is bad (it's actually one of my favourites) but denying or ignoring the problem is detrimental to the genre itself.
As an example of what I mean
>Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 was good. I can make a movie about cannibal rednecks too
But they don't know (or don't want to learn) how to build up suspense and atmosphere the way TCM did, or how it achieved the sense of dread while being low on gore despite stupid and gaudy name. Or that while it drew from Sawney Bean legend with a dose of Ed Gein it was still more or less original rather than copying another movie, etc. TCM is an extremely simple story told excellently and plenty of creators mistake that kind of simplicity with lack of any effort hence most horror output being bad with few gems.
Besides, since horror comics were strangled by the Comics Code before they had any chance to grow, of course it would be difficult for most creators to catch up.

I think the new IT is a great example of what went wrong with horror over the years. The story faded away, and all you have is loud screeching when you're SUPPOSED to be scared. Y'know, just in case.

You can't tell me that scene with the giant Penniwise shuttering in and out with the slideshow wasn't fucking awesome.

But I think we're too far off the subject of Horror Comics.
The last thing I should bring up on horror movies is that yeah they rely on audio sounds for their scares but really that's cause they're one of the few who can so it is like a more exclusive strength of theirs.
Just like how comics have no audio (obviously) but their visuals are limited only to the skills of the artists. So we get a lot more stories that show rather then tell. Making more stories reliant on ultraviolence or unique/complex monster designs that would only work best in this medium.
