Video games have only become more sexist and racist as a result of this mentality.
We've had female protags in video games ever since the very concept of "character" in games being more than a name and collection of pixels became a thing. Space adventurers, medieval warriors, spellcasters, archers, investigators, gamblers, all sorts of shit, some sexual, some asexual, some beautiful, some who fucking looked like men. They starred in action titles, RPGs, playformers, visual novels, FMV games, shooters, puzzlers, all KINDS of shit.
But this was mostly Asia, and a lot of these titles were left behind to push RAD BAD DUDE marketing. Then the Western industry overtook the Japanese industry. Then most of these Western studios were full of people who grew up in that era, who were told constantly that sexism is bad, who were told video games are toys and not REAL art, and they start shoehorning women and non-white characters into their bland, derivative garbage instead of actually crafting meaningful characters.
We have an industry with tons of big budget games coming out featuring "strong, female protagonists of color" with even less character than the girls starring in games made in fucking *1986*. Comics are a different matter, but the progressive push in video games is a farce by people who want to be right, not inclusive. If you want more ethnic representation and worthwhile female characters you should be pushing for uniqueness in artistry, writing and mechanics so devs can actually make a character you care about, like Alis or Samus, instead of shoving a blacksploitation flick backup into a scene while a white guy shoots the baddies and pretending that's somehow curing sexism.
