>>94556652>https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/15/world/europe/poll-british-muslims.html>In an opinion piece in The Guardian, Mr. Versi, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said the survey had focused on some of Britain’s most disadvantaged communities. “Choosing specifically to poll in areas that are poor and more religiously conservative skews the results and makes them indicative of these areas and not of British Muslims nationally,” he wrote.>He pointed to Sadiq Khan, a Muslim candidate for London mayor, Nadiya Hussain, the Muslim winner of a recent season of “The Great British Bake Off,” a hit reality show, and 13 Muslim members of Parliament as evidence that Muslims are “very much part of British society.”Sunghee Lee, a professor at the University of Michigan with a specialty in polling hard-to-reach minority groups, echoed some of Mr. Versi’s concerns about the poll. She said there was a “mismatch” between the group of people who were interviewed and the national population to which ICM Unlimited extrapolated its results.
In an email, she said criticism of the poll was “unavoidable unless it can be shown that U.K. Muslims are similar with respect to outcomes measured in this poll regardless of where they live.” It was not clear that weighting the results had done that, she said.
A lack of information about the interviewers was also a concern, Dr. Lee said. Research has shown that respondents often give different answers based on how they relate to the gender, racial or religious identity of the people asking the questions, she said, an effect known as social desirability bias.
Martin Boon, the director of the polling company, defended the results, saying the survey relied on standard methods of researching minorities in Britain. He called it “the most rigorous research into the views of British Muslims for many years.”
