One thing that perplexes me about this show is how the characters are supposed to be deeply affected by some of the shit that happens to them (like morty killing the fart) but some stuff is just casually blown off for a quick in episode lesson (summer marrying someone).

Morty was really good, even the robot version of him. I guess I get why people wer bitchy about Summer but to me it felt pretty obvious she was going through shit and was acting out and how bad a influence Rick could be. I won't consider it a big problem unless she acts like that every episode which doesn't seem to be the case.

Okay episode. Muscle memory was good. Ending was surprisingly good. I was expecting Summer to be a lot more annoying, but if this is any indication her role will be tolerable. Feelsfags will hate it because Jerry exists to be shit on, not realizing that he's being set up for a triumphant return of some sort near season's end.

the ideas used are entertaining, but in execution, they made it awkward
I suppose that's the point, it's an episode about them dealing with the divorce and all, but they're really on the nose about it too.

I feel like they focused too heavily on the divorce stuff. I understand that it would be worse to just do it without really addressing it afterward, but I just don't care about the characters enough to give a damn about a plot like this.

On the Adult Swim stream, a black lesbian interviewed Harmon and one of the female writers.

Harmon's biggest point about having female writers was that it let every writer be more free with pitching ideas, because they could get a hot take from someone in the room who knew about that stuff. If you had only one woman, guys are afraid to pitch because it could offend, and the one woman is afraid to object because she's outnumbered. Even ratio means everyone can relax and just try and make things funny.

But then he also shitted on the female writer by saying that even though her name was credited with writing the episode, all the writers write all the episodes, and it sounds like what stalled production so long was that you had harmon, roiland, and 4 male writers who had to do more work while accommodating the women who weren't funny and couldn't write, and that if there's a season 4, it's not going to do the even ratios thing again.

Both E01 and E02 are half good and half bad right now. On one hand, they both have that kind of circle jerk where they call the characters badasses for being uncaring nihilists which made Season 2 kinda shit. They also lacked what made Season 1 great, which was just being adventures about drunk grandpa Rick and his grandson Morty. They've changed the character dynamics to be more snarky or quippy or whatever for the most part. The references are also as tired as they were since Season 2.

Still, there's enough there when the writers stop sucking themselves off to say that it's watchable. Summer talking to Jerry at the end was a better approach to covering the episode's moral instead of Morty suddenly shoving in his connection to the episode's overarching plot while smashing bandits. Morty's dialogue and interaction with Armthony outside of that scene and Rick's interaction with the rock and bandits as a whole was more fun than Summer just suggesting they piss on the "billy board." With better execution, both of those scenes could've been good as well, so maybe they can turn it around. It's not exactly bad, but it's a far cry from the genuine fun they made with Season 1.

People who like Jerry should like that he's being encouraged to move on from what was honestly a really bad relationship and set up.
More Summer's been pretty fun, Rick and Mort's relationship's still good to, and the jokes were on popint.

I think it's my imagination, but the show has gotten worse. Audiences loved Rick, so they made Rick act more Rick. Since that wasn't enough, they decided to turn Summer into Rick.

And I really hope they're going somewhere with this Jerry arc because it just seems like the writers are all trying to top each other with who can make him the most miserable

Rick has been spiritually dead from day one, Morty has seen a ton of shit, and both kids are going through their parent's divorce. Harmon said in the interview that a lot of what informed the episode was his own experience as a kid with his parents getting divorced.

Everything to do with the divorce is boring and a waste of time. I'd rather it go back to being a straight comedy like season 1 if they cant get this dramedy shit right. Funny comedy situations have arisen from the divorce (morty's arm, the robot family) but any of the scenes where the characters are emotionally dealing with it are fucking yawners.

I'm impressed with this episode.

It showed the actual feelings for how things played out when going through something emotionally depressing as Divorce. For Summer she had to take a walk in her own mother's shoes and really get the feeling of what it's all like first hand and as for Morty, he was able to work out his aggression and anger with the help of his Arm Ghost.

It was really thoughtful and inspiring.

This episode is just as good as everything else they put out. The difference is you didn't have to stew for 2 years in fresh squeezed nostalgia with the old episodes. Literally everybody's complaint boils down to "it's not as good as the retardedly lofty standards my imagination set it up to be," so everyone instead is blaming anything they can (the pacing, the word count, the divorce subject, new women writers, summer's character growth, you fucking name it.).

tl;dr the episode was fine (good even) but people expect it to rival their expectations, which never happens.

I mean, I heard somewhere that was kind of the point of their characters. Most people will never be in a relationship where it will feel completely stable, and most people will never be able to totally get over someone they divorce or break up with. Jerry and Beth are a scarily accurate depiction of most relationships.

It certainly feels like it jumped the shark, hopefully just a shitty episode. It can be a traumatic experience for many teens and children. Parents might fight in front of the kids. Money can be tight for everyone now that there's not a second adult to help out. Even if a parent doesn't completely leave a child's life, that child has still lost a major source of love and support. Divorce can reveal very ugly sides of people a child used to look up to a lot. It's also a wake-up call that people inevitably change and drift apart and few things are certain. A lot of kids blame themselves and think they're burdensome. Some parents go as far as threatening and even committing kidnapping, suicide, and/or homicide. A friend's dad has threatened to kill himself several times because of the divorce and she can't help but feel guilty about it. Another friend's parents divorced because his mom cheated and it hurt him to see his dad so hurt, and his mom has spent the last decade of her life doing drugs and dating abusive men.

Divorce is usually best for everyone in the long run, but it's not without consequence and people's feelings are still valid.

And I say this all as someone with divorced parents. The only bad thing about the divorce for me was having to visit my dad every week to pacify him while they finalized it, and that was over in a matter of months and I haven't seen him since. Not everyone has the same, easy experience.

Think you've got two main styles of R&M episode:

There's the one that really blows your mind and deals with higher concepts even. And I'm not just talking about Rick Potion #9 where you're just gobsmacked at the end because they started life anew in a new dimension, but like, The Ricks Must Be Crazy with the stacking universes, or even M. Night Shaym-Aliens! with the simulation stuff.

And then you have the episode where they just kinda fuck around and throw crazy shit at you because they can literally make up anything due to the nature of the show and the aliens and different dimensions and Rick's science. A lot of these seem to be the ones where a lot of the catch phrases and marketable ideas - which you could arguably call memes - come from. Stuff like Mr. Meeseeks and Tiny Rick and of course, Get Schwifty.

I would argue the first kind tend to be better, because they're really playing into what made the show popular, these somewhat high concepts that go in a different direction and make you think, even if they did it in a total hand woven, nothing matters, forget it, manner.

Tonight's episode was the second kind, where you had Mad Max world, and you had Morty with a giant possessed muscle arm, and you had Rick with the robot kids, and it ties together a bit, but in the end didn't really pack that punch. I compare it to Get Schwifty where you have goofy things like Headism and Water T and you might have that moment of relevance to the plot at large (Morty talking with Bird Person and seeing that photo of him seemingly as a baby/Summer speaking with Jerry after tasting both mindless thrills and settled married life,) but overall it didn't thrill you or stick in your mind the same way the first kind does.

Doesn't make for a bad episode of course, but this show is so hyped up, it either has to be really funny, or really fucked up to get the thumbs up from the majority now. This one was very much a mixed bag.

I think the Mad Max backdrop really lowered the overall quality of the episode. Unlike the purge episode, they didn't really do anything that interesting with the parody aspect, and there was no need for it outside of giving the audience the gratification of recognizing something popular and a weak connection to teenage rebellion. Lot of small moments made this episode more enjoyable, but doesn't detract from the fact the framing device isn't all that interesting or fun. B-tier episode.

What's up with Summer being like Rick now?

In season 1 and maybe 2 (can't remember), Summer tended to resist Rick and call him out. Now she idolizes him like Beth does, and I don't understand where the change in characterization comes from.

I also liked Morty better when he wasn't as hardened or defiant, and Rick when he was more fallible.

To be honest all of those episodes were before she knew he'd surrender Rick to the authorities. She just chose to be with the father she didn't have for the most of her life, rather than the husband she has an okay-but-nothing-stellar relationship with.

I've never seen so many emotionally crippled men in one thread Jesus fuck you guys. It's one fucking episode, the first episode was really great, and this one is pretty decent. The "women ruin everything" mem needs to die- you all sound like a bunch of five year olds boys upset that you have to share a toy with a girl. Grow up. Much of the show's audience is female. Suck it up and stop being a bunch of pussies.
There's no solid evidence of a trend of worsening episodes because none of them are out yet. It's also not as if they have a quota: 'a woman must write 25% of an episode now'. They can use as much or as little of the female writer's material as they'd like in the episode. So even if the episode is bad you can't just point your finger at the woman, you have to look at all the writers and realize that they all agreed on it.
Jesus, give your opinion on an episode, but there's no need to pull speculation over the ongoing quality of the show out of your ass.
Also, different people react to divorces differently. "If you have feelings over divorce, you're a pussy." Suck a dick, no one cares that you're emotionally crippled and have issues coming to terms with other people's feelings and experiences. We get it. You're very macho and we're all very impressed.

They need to be careful about everyone becoming gigantic assholes towards everyone else. Used to be Rick wasn't even that humongous of an asshole. Even complimented Morty in the pilot and seemed to value having him around. Now Morty is hitting back about as hard as Rick gives and Summer is doing the same. Not everyone can be an asshole, they need at least one character with a decent moral center to play off of Rick's assholish nature. Used to be Morty but he's gotten pretty murder happy recently.

Maybe if they draw attention to it but as of now it's basically the divorce that's to blame. Guess we'll have to see, Morty started to turn last season though. He happily purged when push came to shove and has been on Rick's ass with pretty much every adventure which might be more an issue with the adventures they're going on. They need to try giving Rick and Morty an adventure that's not so inherently awful or with such immediate sense of "we're doing something awful" so that Morty doesn't have to constantly be bitching about how much of a dick Rick is which would also have the benefit of giving Rick's attitude a break. Regain some of the random sense of adventure the first season had.

This episode wasn't bad, but it certainly felt rushed. Feels like it needed more time to develop into a decent payoff, and it's just not something you can do given the time limit. As a result, some of the characters acted a bit unconvincingly assertive or myopic.

Loved the haunted arm subplot anyway.

Morty was shit in it. It wasn't terribly funny at all. It had a silly and unnecessary musical interlude that felt closer to "lol so random" than the similar musical interlude in Ricksy Business that at least had a point and matched the tone of the ep, and the ending was painfully predictable and had a sense of irreverence that you would sooner expect from a teenager.

I thought the Mad Max backdrop was kind of meh and lazy, but the writing was pretty damn good. I really enjoyed the back&forth between the characters this episode.

That said, I can see why some people are raging. Knowing there are extra woman writers and the unnecessary "loser" thing (which still doesn't make any sense, even as a joke) makes this kind of tip toe around the culture war nonsense we watch shows like this to avoid.

I'll be honest with you; this is by and far the weakest episode yet.

This is me coming into this without hype, without prior expectations other than a decent episode and came out of it underwhelmed.

I loved the first episode, though, one of the best yet, but this one is, for me, without a doubt the worst episode yet. Still looking forward to episode 3.

By weakest I meant that as in terms of how much I enjoyed it. I thought I'd keep rather level-headded in my approach to this and just view this just as an episode of a show I like and nothing else, and was still let down.

Mind you, I've enjoyed each and every episode of this so far, even the first episode this season, which you all seem to be up in arms because a woman wrote it or something.

Yeah, it was kinda weird how casual they were around all the murder. Hell Summer's character felt kind of 'off' in general for the whole episode.

For now I'm putting it to them having some emotional problems from dealing with their parents getting divorced (though if that was the case it was very poorly communicated in Summer throughout the episode, at least Morty had his little freak out in the blood dome shouting about Jerry, which kind of explained how he was acting. Summer felt poorly communicated).

Morty has always been kind of a psycho though and very much prone to fits of murderous rage. Summer was the main one that felt weird to me, she really shouldn't have been as used to this stuff in general as she was in this episode. It's like the writers forgot that Summer doesn't normally travel with Rick and therefore should be LESS desensitized than Morty but for some reason it was the other way around.
