I'm not sure what you think the Joker/Harley relationship is, because it varies from medium to medium. Joker smacked Harley around in the Timm/Dini universe because it was funny. It referenced The Honeymooners, but in an obviously twisted way. In the Suicide Squad film, Harley accepted the electroshock treatment, and freely chose to jump into a dangerous vat of chemicals so she could prove her devotion to Joker.
Harley sticks with Joker despite his flaws because love makes people crazy. But that's what love is for everyone. The Ropers from Three's Company, Archie And Edith Bunker, Al and Peg Bundy, Frank and Marie Barone, all had plainly disfunctional relationships that often saw put downs and insults thrown around. But love means accepting the flaws of your partner and loving them DESPITE those flaws. Harley loves Joker for this reason, even though he doesn't always return the affection. But again, physical violence is involved because Joker and Harley are literally insane.
The difference with New52 was that Joker simply stopped caring about Harley completely, and tried to kill her. That "killing dozens of Harleys" retcon was dumb, and I do believe it was recently retconned away. But that was just one of the reasons for the split. Harley was basically just tired of being ignored.
