It's not bad that it's offbeat plotwise, it's not bad that it's dramatic, but hooo man do the two NOT go together
Compare to something like Venture Bros, where they simply cannot win. Nobody can. But every new change in life has some really clever dramatic twist to it, and leads somewhere new and interesting.
Finn basically has 10 mommies and daddies who keep abandoning him to make new shows, leaving his life disjointed and unsatisfying. I've never seen a show suffer this much from its own success before. The fandom grew so massive from the first 4-5 seasons airing back to back, and then the perpetual hiatus, the 'bomb' phenomenon, the excision of all reruns, and the huge swerve of the show's tone really.. just..
I dunno it's still the best show ever. but it will never be able to live up to the standard it set during its meteoric rise. we thought ANYTHING could happen.
