Back in the Silver Age having a ring basically meant you were Silver Surfer with a weakness to yellow and a 24 hour charge time. It could create and uncreate matter, travel through time, steal superpowers, erase minds, basically do anything.
Back in the Silver Age a careless beam from Hal's ring blew up a planet an Tomar Re (the parrot looking alien dude) moved a solar system. In one Gardner Fox Justice League issue the soviets and Americans lob all their nukes at each other and Hal stops all the missiles in an instant (this scene was what Frank Millar was referencing with Hal's appearance in DKR2).
So Silver Age Hal was better than Dr. Manhattan.
Nowadays a lantern can barely move a planet. Back in the day they were arguably more powerful than even Superman.
Just don't have them fight anything yellow.
