An old friend of the family (an agricluture engineer) used to be a colon in Congo (my mother was actually born in Africa) once told me about how they were trying to teach black man to take better care of their crops, but noticed black tended to just do what they were tld to and not care about actually learning and basically forgetting and having to be reformed every year.
So once, the was this reporter, a bit on the left side who made a report on the work they were doing and noticed there were only men working, so he asked if they could make women work too, for his picture.
So, they agreed to form black women so he could make his pictures, but then they noticed something.
THE WOMEN THEY HAD FORMED ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT THIS SHIT. not only that, but THEY WERE ACTUALLY MAKING THE EFFORT OF LEARNING AND IMPROVE.
What they had failed to accomplished for years with the men had almost instantly worked with the women.
but it was shortly before the independance and they had to go before being able to make anything large scale.
I remember he repeated several time:
WE SHOULD HAVE TAUGHT THE WOMEN.
Since then I have asked repeatedly to several people wh were in missions in Africa, I have always got the same result: when they bothered to involve women in the project, even for hardwork, it always turned way better, and what was taught stayed, and you could be confident the businesses would still be running if you were gone then coming back.
Anyone who want to launch something durable in Africa must involve women. they are the one who actually care.
