>>93112109Even if Varmints didn't exist, past "What was lost" we have no reason to believe PB wouldn't have done something like this, episodes like Varmints didn't build on anything.
They required Princess Bubblegum to become gradually less responsible as the series went on, to act uncharacteristically immature and irrationally when faced with situations someone of her age and experience should be more than capable of dealing with, her ego is almost completely forgotten at this point.
Their attempt to explain away the conflict that was talked about in "what was missing" fails on even the most basic level. To attempt to explain it away as "the kingdom was growing and she just didn't have time" or that she was overwhelmed ignores the most basic fact that she is entirely in control of the Candy Kingdom, and those within it are her creations. Which was an interesting /negative/ trait of PB we got to see in her in the early series: her hubris and controlling nature, her desire for order. PB created an entire kingdom of subservient candy people who weren't capable of functioning without her. Her callous disregard for life shown in the destruction of the rattleballs, The creation (and subsequent removal) of Lemongrab.
PB surrounded herself with beings who'd admire her, including Finn, but Marceline's character was never the same way, or at least was trying not to be.
Which leads to Marceline, the radical dame who likes to play games, she was never exactly a loner, from her initial appearance the first thing we learned about her was that she traveled a lot and settled down wherever she wanted to. She was crass, abrasive, mildly disingenuous, playful fighter, she was clearly self-confident. Not exactly the type to worship at the feet of a princess, and this is interestingly almost exactly what she says to PB in her song, and it's an interesting baseline for what would have been their dynamic
