If the main push is individual comics impacting the shared universe, it works. Under that system, comics are largely standalone with the exception of some easter eggs you'll pick up from reading multiple comics in that universe, or run into a character or plotline that ties two individual heroes together for a time.
Where you run into problems is when the shared universe has grown so bloated that individual comics and heroes in that universe are largely irrelevant in the face of the shared universe itself. Once that happens, you inevitably run into soulless comics being run to keep the 'shared universe' fully stocked even if the comic isn't actually any good, and weird top down decisions being forced on everyone like Civil War for the latest epic megacrossover the acts like a fucking wrecking ball to whatever was going on in everyone's stories at the time.
Think of a shared universe like salt in a meal. A little goes a long way, and the more you add the more is covers up the taste of whatever it was you were originally eating. No one wants to just eat a spoonful of pure salt, that is awful. That doesn't make salt itself bad, you just have to know how to fucking cook.
