I was looking at a behind-the-scenes video on the creation of Grievous earlier. It was pretty interesting!

His basically final design was actually made by a guy at the last minute before showing it off to Lucas, who loved the idea of a guy that’s both organic and machine, like Vader.

And as they worked on designing Grievous, they had at least these guidelines to go off of:
“As long as it’s scary.”
“It’s gotta be threatening.”

Nothing about wanting to make a coughing droid, but that might be from a different video.

Why would anyone assume the Falcon belongs to Ray? With Han dead the Falcon is obviously Chewie's ship now. Did it not occur to anyone that maybe finding Luke is what he wants too? So he took HIS ship to go find him and took Ray along for the bantz.

Up until an unknown time between Bloodline and TFA, Chewie is still on Kashyyyk fixing the planet and his family life, after staying there starting from Life Debt onwards. With his one main reason to be off-planet dead, I don't see a reason why he should be the keeper of the ship. Especially when someone else who can fly it almost as well as Han could is now in the picture to do just that.

And why wouldn't Chewie wouldn't want to fly off and see Luke, who can probably understand Wookiee at this point, and tell him the bad news in person? Or just to see an old friend, you know. I don't see any reason for them to write Chewie off and send him packing back to Kashyyk. That would be boring, I don't care what backstory they've given him. He's back in action and he has a ship, Ray's aboard because they have the same goal at the moment and the plot will no doubt given them more common goals to keep her aboard.

Chewie is going to be retired more and more because of Mayhew being too old to do shit anymore, out of respect for him. The whole OT is about throwing out the old and letting the new characters and situations take over. Han is dead, Chewie is focusing on his family again after being away from it for near a decade+, Leia is going to die because Carrie died. Luke and Lando will probably be killed off as well.

What's wrong with Hux?

Gleeson fucking sold it. Here's my fresh hot opinion, and feel free to disagree, but he was actually amusing. Krennic was sad in a way that was good, because you understood his motives. Galen was his best friend, and he didn't really understand people. He thought he did, but he was just playing himself. Hux was good ham and that speech scene is one of the only good ones in the film. I hope we get more character to him beyond 'he killed his dad and he's kind of a cunt' but I like that. But if that's not your thing, I get it. But not every villain is a Vader

This is an excellent way of putting it. Hux doesn't have much character (at least not yet) but Gleeson really worked the fuck out of what he had. I do love that speech. He's nearly foaming at the mouth by the end of it, it's fantastic.

He literally had an understudy for TFA who did half his scenes, with the explicit purpose of eventually taking over the role when Mayhew's no longer able to do it. The guy's apparently playing Chewie entirely in the Han movie.

I giggled when Vader first appeared in the movie, it's like he acquired a twisted sense of humor out of nowhere. With the way he addressed Krennic, he was probably wondering why the guy hadn't been tossed out the airlock yet.

I'm getting really nervous about IX. I'm worried that half the shit JJ "set up" (or, rather, thrown at the wall to create artificial sequel bait) won't be resolved even in TLJ. I hoped TLJ was going to clear things up and set IX for a tidy resolution, but it seems like we're going to play this stupid game all the way to the end. Trevorrow has his work cut out for him and I have doubts that he can handle it. I don't hate the guy, in fact, I pity him. LFL threw him right in the fire.

I'm just so tired of these manufactured mysteries, smoke and mirrors, teasing and baiting. I like Rey, Kylo and Finn. I'm invested, I want to see where their stories will go. No need to burden these movies with all this secrecy and cultivating delayed gratification that will do nothing but blow up in LFL's faces (just look at the shitstorm whenever a popular theory is debunked). TFA was already crippled by this strategy. Does TLJ have to be too? Do we have to face an inevitable letdown, á la Mass Effect 3, in IX?

Just tell a fucking story without all this needless bullshit. You don't need that, if people like the characters and the setting, they'll go see those movies. If the MCU keeps trucking without a pointless carrot on a stick, then Star Wars, a brand with much bigger reach and goodwill, certainly can too.

Well, yeah, there is Thanos, but there is a big difference between how Feige handled him and how LFL handles Snoke for example.

The crystals do not produce different effects no.

They are deeply connected to the force, and can help the user they connect to immerse deeper in their connection to the force. But they do not have unique abilities beyond that.

There's currently no explanation to why certain crystals become certain colors. (Black, purple, ect)

Might just be rare variants found on certain planets, like black crystals on Mandalore (possibly due to the wartorn land).

All we know for sure is that crystals are colourless until they are discovered by their Jedi, and that the blade will usually ignite blue or green. Rare cases will have the blade ignite Yellow, and traditionally this will end up being used formally by the Jedi Temple Guards. Dark Siders who perverse the use of the force will cause their crystals to bleed red, representing the unnatural usage of the force. These crystals can be purified to turn white however.

That's everything we know. It's unlikely that additional effects or roles will be added based on color because frankly the EU doing that was stupid as it attached huge implications to characters we saw on screen that were developed completely differently without any of that stuff in mind.

I liked differently coloured crystals more tbqh, it's a bit more mundane than having it turn into a certain colour. But I also know fuck all about how the crystals or sabers in general used to work in the EU.

Then again I suppose with how the red ones work now, it only makes sense for the crystals to change colour depending on their user.

There were some early leaks about the Resistance having a superweapon, and it played out like the cold war, where for most of the ST neither sides would use their superweapon, until they are absolutely forced to for whatever reason, possibly an extra-galactic threat.

And I feel like TFA has tarnished any potential repuatation her character could have had anyway, I don't think anything any of the new films could do can stop her from being a joke.
Also shes now as much of a traitor as Finn. She lowered the shields of starkiller base without any resistance which allowed it to be destroyed, it was pathetic. And then she gets thrown down a trash chute. Plus they're not going to give any explanation for how she managed to escape that trash chute and the starkiller before it was destroyed in the next film. It'll probably be left for her comic, which I imagine only exists so the TLG can dig themselves out of the hole trash chute that JJleft them in

Plus the mods are aware that Star Wars is literally the biggest franchise ever, and even without annual movie releases, there is never a shortage of content to discuss. Look at /tv/, often spammed with multiple Star Wars threads. That is not what mods want on /co/, nor do mods want to have to police the board because the biggest franchise on the planet is relegated only to a hidden board on 4chan. Think about how silly that would be, it wouldn't work at all. Star Wars will get its own board on 4chan before it's banned away to /trash/.

But a very important thing to note is that we keep to ourselves and dont make multiple shitposty threads all over the board. We may have internal arguments from time to time, but for the most part, we're just the circle of nerds talking about Star Wars in the corner of the playground.

I have to agree. Personally, I do NOT see any point in pulling Snoke out of thin air especially JUST after 30 years from the OT storyline. Sorry, I JUST don't.

imo, it would have made more sense using Grand Admiral Thrawn as the main antagonist of this particular Sequel Trilogy. For one thing, he was not present at the Battle of Endor. So the writers could have made it so that he finds out Sidious and Vader have been killed. He then regroups the remaining Imperial Navy and loyalists to strike back on the Rebellion-New Republic.

Heck, if they wanted a Sith warrior using a lightsaber to dazzle the fans of the Preq saber fight scenes, they could have made a major surprise by bringing back Darth Maul (he wouldn't be old since Zabrak age is different from human) who now holds the mantle of leader of the Sith now that Sidious is dead. But instead of continuing Bane's Rule-Of-Two, Maul would instead create an army of Sith to try and overwhelm the New Republic and the resurgence of the Jedi Order under Luke's Academy. If they also wanted or needed drama, go ahead and lure the son of Solo to join the New Empire where Leia tries to bring him back.

bringing in completely new villain characters at this stage of the saga does not make sense.

Darth Maul's half Zabrak. And Zabrak age just the same as human and near-humans species'. So he'd be both chronologically and physically in his 80s by the time of the ST.

It became dreadfully apparent that he actively ceased to be a Sith Lord. He still uses their teachings because he has nothing else to go on, but he's basically just a miscellaneous force wielder who adhered to the Dark Side after he was expelled from the Sith.

Like both trilogies before it, it should wrap up everything about its particular era while leaving the future prospects relatively open ended. Though the Prequels do lead into the Originals, the nearly twenty year timeline between the end of one and the beginning of the other is quite bare save for one or two characters at the moment, being Ben(his periodic journals in the Star Wars ongoing) and Vader(the upcoming Darth Vader series picking up right after RotS).

I'm hoping it will end with the development of a Space Cold War between the First Order (which has conquered or just absorbed a lot of the Outer Rim with an exclave around the Core Worlds) against a reinvigorated New Republic (possibly allied with a Mandalore that's a lot more interested in galactic affairs then it was during the time between the OT and ST)
As for characters, Finn has become a general for the New Republic, Poe is now a full fledged Squadron Leader building his own personal commando unit (think Wraith Squadron) and Rose is the Chief Engineer onboard Finn's flagship
Rey has created a new order of Force sensitive warriors with Luke's help, styled after the Jedi but attempting to correct a lot of their mistakes, in particular this new group is not directly connected to the Republic, for better or for worse
On the other side, Kylo is rebuilding his own vision of the Knights of Ren, having turned on Snoke and seized control of them, before handing over the First Order to Rae Sloane and/or Thrawn. I'm genuinely uncertain how Thrawn would feel about the FO but I do like the idea of him at least being on its Admiralty Board/Cabinet
Basically just leave things off in a definitive yet tense peace for the time being. The heroes have won, the galaxy is safe for the moment, and its time for everyone to lick their wounds and reconsider their plans

Both, in a sense. It should wrap up things as they are, but still leave room so that everything that happens afterward doesn't have ramifications on a galactic level. One of the reasons why the EU was such shit was because there was constantly one big galactic crisis after another. Just put that shit to rest already and for good. We don't need another galactic scale war for Star Wars. It can still be Star Wars even if it's focusing on small scale/planetary wars.

Surely even between the fall of the old Sith Empire and the Clone War there were probably thousands of them. We can have that and it can still be interesting. We even got a taste of that with TPM.

So yeah. Rebuild the Republic and base it again on Coruscant, because fuck JJ. Let Luke and Rey go to, SUCCESSFULLY, rebuild the Jedi Order. Let Poe and Finn establish some kind of standing army/militia for the Republic and they, or their successors in future Saga films, all just deal with the problems of the galaxy one issue at a time.

They probably are the new standard of astromech.

I can't remember which book it was (I think Aftermath, actually), but it introduces one of the first bb units as a therapy droid, deliberately made to look cute and serve as a safty-dog type companion. I'd assume that these therapy droids eventually were outfitted into Astromechs, until eventually becoming the standard.

Anyone know which book it was? I'd love to find a source because even the wook doesn't seem to mention this

I call bullshit on all of this, LEGO never releases first wave big ships, only Falcon rereleases and fighters, only occasionally doing capital scale vessels no sooner than 10 years after a movie release. That's how long it took for people to get a non-UCS Star Destroyer, or Venator, or Blockade Runner, and those three were basically it, ever.

Definitely. She should be, as she already tapped into the Dark side in TFA and has just as much, if not more, baggage as Anakin. Luke's life was sunshine and puppies compared to both of them. I can easily see Snoke or Kylo luring her away from Luke, either with information related to her past or generally with some sort of promise related to whatever Luke's cooking up with regards to the future of the Jedi. Rey might eventually end up opposing Luke's plans (according to the leaks, she already disagrees with him over the treatment of Kylo) and Snoke or Kylo will definitely be there to manipulate her.

My biggest hope is that she'll basically go a bit mad with power. Use the ease with which she mastered her connection with the Force in TFA in the narrative. She's already quite arrogant in TFA and that should be reflected in her training too, with her feeling like Luke doesn't really have anything to teach her (from her point of view, of course - and we already know that Luke isn't really going to be a "conventional" teacher like Obi-Wan and Yoda were to him), thus growing defiant. She should have a poor self-control too. While Luke worked hard for his aptitude and so understood the cost and dangerous allure of the Dark side and Anakin had years of Jedi conditioning to keep him somewhat in the Light, Rey has all this enourmous power at her fingertips already. And so she should be irresponsible, flirting with the Dark side without understanding and respecting it.

In short, Rey should fall prey to her own confidence and hubris.

I don't think it's going to be about her confidence and hubris being her downfall. Right now, Rey doesn't have a Jedi mindset at all. Her goal isn't related to that. She wants to find her family, and has quite a lot of anger in her. If Snoke or Kylo can offer her some truth on the state of her family, or if Luke had something to do with their disappearance, that would probably be enough to lure her to the dark in some respect.

Rey grew up thinking like a survivor and a scrapper with a single-minded goal and she has no real connection to Luke or the Jedi other than Han and stories she's heard. That can be used against her.

Just finished the final Aftermath book

The sad thing is, I didn't hate the Gallius Rax subplot. A more competent author would have dedicated an entire book just to his upbringing, planning, and implementation of Sheev's Contingency plan.

We could had a book that showed how Sheev controlled and grew his inner circle with Rax observing it all.

I like where they are going with the beginnings of the first order, but the scope felt really small. compared to Lost Stars, the Jakku battle felt tiny, and the remnant's of the empire that went off to create the first order felt even smaller.

You have Sheev's yacht with 2 adults and a few dozen wacky kids, and a Super Star Destroyer that could hold, at max, probably a million people. As well as some straggling star destroyers and imperial agents that also received the coordinates. This reminds me of Traviss' "1 million clones" incident.

I remembered wrong, it was actually 3 million clones.

In one of her books, she said the total size of the Clone Army was only 3 million clones.

Lots of people got angry about that because it just seemed way off. at the time, the Republic had a canon 1.3 million planets. that means they could only afford 2.3 clones per planet with an army that size.

There's references to an Imperial Remnant apparently nestled in the Core region (I'd assume Kuat and a few other worlds that clearly benefited from/just plain preferred the Imperial way of doing things), and Coruscant seems to have been left to the devices of Mas Ameeda as part of whatever deal the New Republic cut with him.
The evacuation plan seems to have just gathered up those Imperial remnants who wanted to continue the fight no matter what, leaving the relatively peaceful ones behind

BB-8 could be one of a kind on the Resistance. The Resistance uses old New Republic surplus. BB-8 was a top of the line astromech that Poe used in his T-85 X-Wings when he was with the New Republic Defense Fleet. When he left BB-8 was a going away present.

If this is the case, then all the supplemental material is just as canon now as the EU was before the Disney sale: kind of but not really. Rian Johnson can do what he wants story-wise, and if Rian Johnson has any decent integrity as a filmmaker, he's not going to bend over backwards just to put Sloane or Thrawn or Ezra in the films just so that it lines up with the "canon" material.

Why would you want things mandated? All the synergy in Rogue One was because the people working on it loved Rebels. Rian Johnson even added stuff to Bloodline. Agreed about Thrawn and Ezra though. Unless I'm mistaken, I doubt Rebels Season 4 will even be over by the time TLJ is out, so they're not going to spoil their own story even for a movie, especially not when that movie can do fine without either of them

Revan's story is complicated enough to make even an abridged retelling take a while, and to do that in the new canon you'd essentially have to pick a canon path and ending for Revan's story, and thus undermine one of the main appeals of KoToR.
If he does get "recanonized" it will be as a somewhat obscure mythological/archaeological figure with only the barest of details known about their life

Plus like you said, Kylo already did the worst possible thing he could do in the eyes of the audience in the first movie and it didn't work. Adam Driver has recently said that Kylo is regretting it in TLJ. What else would be enough to turn him completely dark if that wasn't? Killing Luke wouldn't do it, since it seems Kylo really doesn't like Luke.

I think Disney/Marvel is onto a really smart formula when the select their directors

Take young guys with lots of passion and only a few Hollywood movies under their belts.
With the exception of JJ, they haven't chosen any established directors. Always newish guys with just a bit of success.

I guess they loosened up after they brought JJ "Series Reviver" Abrams in to ensure the Star Wars train got back on track.

I'd argue that the romance is even central to ESB, you could remove that subplot entirely. You'd end up with a much worse movie, but the overall story could survive it. Its only central in the PT because two characters have to bang to make the main characters for the original movies

That's a good assessment, JJ's movies have a few moments where they could have taken riskier stances than they did, I remember thinking Into Darkness was hinting at some greater statement about militarization that it never quite made.

Looper wasn't inconsistent.
In an earlier scene we see that time travel doesn't undo anything that has happened in the future.
There's a future guy with his past self captured.
They torture the past version and begin removing body parts
The future guy is still running but he begins losing the parts his past self is losing at the same time.
Future guy ends up with no hands or feet or whatever, but he's still in a place that would have been impossible to reach if he lost those parts since he was young.

But the end of the movie has Joseph Gordon Willis stop his future self by shooting himself in the head. But that never would have undone anything the future version of himself did.
Just like the earlier guy was able to drive a car despite having his younger hands removed

And the telekinesis thing technically classifies as "foreshadowing" but it's really insulting about it
The movie is like "Oh by the way, here's this big thing. But don't pay attention to it. It's just there, relax"
But at the end, the movie is like "I fooled you so hard with the TK thing, didn't I? It's actually SUPER important"

Good foreshadowing is good because you don't realize it's foreshadowing until you look back at it. It was just insulting that he would think audiences would TK actually being important would be surprising.

I don't think they can address Leia's death in any way without it being immersion breaking. Everyone knows Carrie Fisher died, and everyone knows she won't be in IX. Plus with how much Kathy Kennedy keeps saying IX was "her movie" we'll know she originally was meant to survive TLJ. So if they CGI her in and kill her in the first 5 minutes, it'll seem tasteless. If they kill her off-screen it'll be anti-climactic. If they just write her out of the story, it'll be awkward for her to suddenly be off screen for the entire film for no reason.

Fisher's family already okay'd the the use of her likeness. Disney discussed using the deleted scenes from TFA but Kennedy walked those back.

It's less about dignity and more about facing bad PR for it. People like to say "w-well everyone will have forgotten LFL's non-CGI statement when Episode 9 happens!" but something this high profile is going to be watched pretty closely, especially since how 9 deals with Carrie's absence is one of the biggest questions and will remain one of the biggest things people will look for until it happens (unless 8 kills her, rendering the need to recast/CGI her in 9 moot).

I hadn't heard anything about her family approving a CGI Leia for 9 and/or 8. I know her brother was under the impression that they had footage that they would use for 9, but that turned out to be a misunderstanding.

They got permission from Carrie herself to do it in RO, but I don't think that covers doing it for TLJ or 9.

Looper has it's own internal rules. They're stupid as fuck but they work MOST of the time.

Seth losing his fingers was important to show that changes were retroactive in a specific way that hold up through the film.

The only real problem with the rules of Time Travel is they apparently don't apply if your name is Bruce Willis. He already changed his future, somehow, without any outside influence.

This. People forget but BDW was fucking PISSED when Glover was brought on board. He was Lando in every appearance outside the films that needed a person to be there down to video games and cartoons. He had every right to be, given he got locked out of the sequel trilogy despite being literally the only guy on call for every project for 40 goddamn years.

Carrie was a bit less invested than that but she did a whole lot of reinventing of Leia on set to really make the character hers. To recast her without her age being an issue like Billy would be a gut punch a lot of people would hate.

I think the big problem I have with the "it's so much bigger" is that a lot of Jedi philosophy is intentionally boiled down. There's a light side. There's a dark side. The force will sometimes guide you and respond to you. That's it. Even saying there's an explicit light side is pushing it half the time. They don't really DO "bigger" since they don't have any kind of grand rituals and inherently rejected a lot of the deeper philosophical underpinnings of the force that you got with washouts and tribals.

Obviously there's more to the force than the jedi and sith, and more than one flavor of each. However to say that the basic assumption that's been proven in both timelines over and over is wrong is kind of fucked up.
