His concept is only silly if you think of him as Horse Thor and nothing other than Horse Thor. His actual origin (genetically modified alien protector that Odin deemed worthy of wielding his own version of Thor's hammer) is pretty solid.

This. Absolutely this. MCU has not done any character justice since Winter Soldier, and even then that one followed the horseshit of IM3 and Thor 2.

I agree that the Asgardians got nerfed hard in the MCU and the not gods/no magic thing is bullshit, but that isn't the problem with Thor's movies.
