Chris Ware approaches his subject with utter seriousness, it's not about one particular moment of 'shit just got real', Clarissa dabbles in levity with a kind of cartoony art-style and then tries to pull the floor out from under the reader with some sort of dark reveal at the end of every story. The problem is once you already know the premise, the 'reveal' loses its punch. It's like he's just telling the same joke over and over.
