It's good for keeping tabs on your favourite games comics and stuff, and find out the most notable news about them, but as far as real discussion goes there is not much of it. The first posts usually get most votes and go to the top, all the rest are ignored. Comments are also strictly branched, so you can't say quote two different people from two different points in the thread, you can only reply to one guy and your post will only ever be seen below that guy's post.
Also, karmawhoring is not a joke. Because of it, a large amount of posts end up being puns, memes, or shitty jokes.
Generally speaking, I suggest you see Reddit as a place where you go to read news and see new fanart or shit like that, and comments are only a plus you lightly skim through.
