As someone who's spent hundreds of hours playing each of the games, I can say the RS developed ones are some of the most expertly designed games I've played in my entire life. Knight continues this, the combat design and the predator system are just leagues beyond anything coming out these days.

From every other point, however, they've been ruined by how fucking ridiculously overblown the video game industry is now. You just can't feel any kind of personal touch anymore because Knight is developed by like 500 fucking people. All of the story stuff is all this high-concept big picture crap you get when you have like three people writing the game in their own corner without input from the rest of the office.

And then you have all the stupid executive marketing crap. Gotta make the Batmobile be covered in canons because idiots won't be able to drive three feet without wishing they were playing a shooting game, gotta have the plot be BIG and IMPORTANT, gotta make everyone look like a tacticool dumbass out of a 90's comic, and on and on.

I wish there could be a game with the gameplay scope of Knight, but the story scope of Asylum. Imagine if instead of putting so much time into the ridiculous setpieces of the main plot, all that focus went into making the sidequests, and then there was just some narrative tissue tying them together.

Games are just Hollywood 2: Electric Boogaloo now.

I kind of agree with this even though I liked City and Origins. Later games tried to recycle things that worked in Asylum too much rather than realizing they worked in the presence of the asylum.

They had one of the best renditions of the Scarecrow ever made. As a whole they managed to translate a lot of characters really well into the game (except Penguin).

Yeah but it's actually enjoyable in Batman. The enemy varities can be genuinely tough, the Predator system has a 3D aspect while you have to deal with shit like heart beat monitors, scanners, mines, body arour and stuff.

They're the only ones who really did it well I think. The combat and predator seections still feel leagues beyond any of the others; only shadow of mordor kind of comes close.

Rocksteady might be done but I wouldn't be surprised if WB kept on trying to milk it. Do wish they'd try it with a different character as the focus though, or even a wildly different Batman at the least. I mean imagine Adam West Arkham.

I still need to play Arkham Knight, but I like the games. I love how it's a sincere AAA effort to make a good game based on a superhero license, which is rare, and it succeeds where other attempts have failed. They're really atmospheric, have great art direction, and have some surprisingly clever puzzles and level design, making for an unanticipatedly good action-adventure series, which I appreciate, because that's actually pretty rare these days.

It's casual bullshit, although I will say that it does make you feel like Batman.

I really wish Rocksteady would sit down and try to figure out how boss fights could really work in this franchise, and if not, then overhaul the combat system anyway, so we could have some good fights. It could use one anyway.

There is the stealth however. I'm not a big fan of stealth, so I actually really like, for the most part, how the games handle stealth.

That said, I do agree with >>91936491 with that the games are an unfortunate victim of modern AAA development. The marketing obviously targets dudebros and casuals, the game is riddled with DLC and season pass bullshit, the games have a lot of really bad, edgy character design straight out of the 7th gen, and so on.

This is bullshit. Also, Arkham Origins manages to have decent boss fights even despite the combat system and honestly Arkham City had some good boss fights too. Freeze is literal top tier, and Ra's and Clayface are pretty solid too.
I do agree it's not the most in depth combat system, I'm not sure who you're seeing compare it to DMC, but to just dismiss it as casual bullshit is retarded. It's simplistic, but largely because it's sort of more rhythm based and focused on high scores and combos.

Only Freeze was actually good. Ra's and Clayface could've been good, but they fell into the trap of having you fight groups of mooks again because they didn't think of any other way of making their bosses more interesting. In fact, a lot of Arkham bosses end up pulling this shit. Like, almost all of them.

It's really casual, anon. It doesn't really rely much on technical skill at all. You can spend hours practicing DMC to git gud at it and still see a room for improvement, and while you do need to git gud to an extent in Arkham combat, it's really linear and by-the-motions, so you just end up doing the same shit on repeat every time you fight enemies.

Well, I mean, of course you do since there's only 1 attack button. There are variations but it's obviously not like DmC or something where you can vary between your heavy and lights and even have different weapons to go at it with. Like I said I don't know who's comparing it to DmC or Bayonetta but it's a daft comparison to make.

It's not as in depth as them, those games are pretty much built on their combat systems. But that doesn't make it casual. Go hit AK and try and get the Community Challenge trophies, it takes some doing, and not because of artifical difficulty or some bollocks.
Though, I do admit, it's frustrating when Batman decides to attack the wrong dude who happens to have stun sticks, breaking your combo

I meant this part was the bullshit. A good combat system isn't determined by boss fights. You say yourself that the Deathstroke fight was good-ish and had untapped potential, so clearly there's room within the combat system for a good battle. The system just doesn't work very well with bosses because you're trying to be Batman, so goons should be no threat and that's what you spend most of your time doing. Failing to have a good boss battle doesn't mean your combat system is shit, maybe it doesn't adapt as well as others, but the Arkham system is actually pretty great for what it does.

It's just more timing based than an in depth system. A bit rhythmic really, when you get it flowing and hit your counters right (turning off the indicators), your attacks right and pull off your abilities to rack up a sweet combo, it feels bloody sublime.
And to me, that's really what makes it a good combat system. I find it fun af, and I've played DmC 1-4 too.

In the end it's probably just different strokes

Played Asylum and loved it.
Tried to play City twice and didn't like it, only got maybe four or five hours in each time.
Haven't played the others.

Honestly I'd probably replay Asylum before trying out the others. I'm not entirely sure why it is I didn't like City, probably a lot of little stuff I can't be bothered to go in depth on right now. Whichever one had Scarecrow as the main villain sounds kind of cool though, just because it's someone other than Joker taking the spotlight.

Hey remember how at the end of Asylum there was that stinger of someone, I believe it was random between Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and maybe one other person I can't remember, grabbing a crate of the Titan formula? The gameplay, exploration and side quests were better than the story but still 9/10 (except for the super homo end lol, carries out joker while leaves talia like the slag she is). Origins was ok, dropped it when joker showed up. Dropped knight early on, I didn't like the reliance on the bat mobile to move around.

Well, you see, about that
Joker actually does plenty of spotlight. Batman is followed by a bunch of Joker hallucinations throughout the game because of something in his blood. This is even how he manages to beat Scarecrow, and he does become sort of the final confrontation in the game. In a way these Joker hallucinations take up far more screentime than the Scarecrow himself.

mostly everything I dont like about batman, even though theyre still some of my favorite games. Id rather have a stealth game more like Splinter Cell 3 but with bossfights included and big levels with multiple ways to complete them according to the gadgets you use. Knight pissed me off because the story had soooo many seeds planted in City that led to literally nothing except Scarecrow

I don't really care for the last one, but those first four could have been easily woven into the story to make it more than just the Scarecrow/Knight/Joker fest it was.

Instead, Azreal and Hush are relegated to side missions (the latter being literally a couple of cutscenes) that have no effect on the plot, whilst Calander Man is just an Easter Egg in the last cutscene and Ra's was DLC that didn't expand on the fact he knew Bruce Wayne.

What even are these? Riddler stories? Who gives a shit? Arkham Knight's story was an unsatisfying mess and a slog. The characterizations and dialogue sucked. The numerous "twists" were lame and could be seen from a mile away. As a narrative experience, City blows Knight out of the water, not that I'm saying it's great, but that Knight was incredibly disappointing in that regard. The only thing it did better was production value, really.

This. Someone in the story details development area really fucked up. Her necklace still says flying Graysons, and there is no reason whatsoever to have her not with Dick, except that being a Nightwing fan is and always will be suffering, and perhaps they wanted Barbara's seeming death to have double the trouble.

Really, though, where they dropped the ball hardest was having Scarcrow win in the end, in so much as he destroyed the Batman. You don't have to 'retire' Batman to end the game series. In fact, it's been done to often, with Beyond and Rises.

Ive been hoping that they would create a Suicide Squad game kinda set in the same world. I imagine that it might play like Hitman, but with a team of b-list supervillains. It would have the same detailed sandbox approach to meeting objectives, but you could jump between each character to do a certain task.
It would open up the Arkham universe to include all the other facets of the DC universe. IDK it seems like fun and Arkham Origins (which is canon) kinda had a lazy easter egg which got me all hopeful.

Barbara as Batgirl is there to serve as either Batman's love interest, if you're an oldfag or Bruce Timm, or Robin's love interest.

They were better when it was stealth/brawling games with a few nifty gadgets rather than Bat-tank fighting legions of unmanned drones and militias.

Also, shoehorning Joker into Origins was such a waste, if they had played Black Mask/Bane as the straight-up villains then it would have been cooler.

Apparently the Joker thing was something demanded by WB during development to get more hype for the game.
A lot of the concept art basically had Deathstroke as the main villain and you'd fight him multiple times through the game, each time being forced to escape rather then fight him directly because his superhuman abilities would make him too hard to directly fight.
He was gonna have these remote control "drones" that would hunt you down across the city that you'd avoid because if you didn't he'd show up like a one-man MGS swat team and kick your ass until you escaped again.

Presumably the final fight would involve you turning your environment against him rather then simply trying to engage a blatant superhuman in a straight-up fistfight.

Arkham Asylum is still the king just because it's tight and focused and personal. Plus it's the only one that actually feels like Batman and not some edgelord manchild's Batman fanfic.

The only clear improvements of the sequels is the way they opened up the combat mechanics but AA still functions fine.

It was nebulous in terms of where it existed in the Batman universe and sure the Riddler trophies broke immersion a bit, but it was a pretty decent entry into the Batman universe.

But then they had to make their own universe and the story went to shit.

Except it wasnt, the comic was about the villains overtaking the asylum in a nightmarish, surrealist horror setting. The game has no concept of dread, atmosphere or vulnerability at all. The plot goes pants on the head retarded the moment Joker escapes into the hyper advanced sci fi complex that is supposed to be arkham with batman on the other side of the glass, devolving more and more into ridiculousness in what is probably one of the most ridiculous and most non-grounded batmanverses conceived

Yeah, it doesn't have the whole "Batman surrenders himself to the villains and convinces Harvey to make a choice for himself" thing and really just cribs off of the setting more.

But, Titan nonsense aside, I thought the game benefited from having a simple plot that just showed off the Asylum.

Granted, if there's one problem that I think the games have, especially in Knight, it's that they're supposed to be "The Worst Night of Batman's Life", but he's always too powerful gameplay-wise in order to have a proper fight with anyone.

While playing through Outlast, it really hit me how shitty arkham asylum was in even beginning to deliver on the asylum feeling like a real, scary environment controlled by lunatics. It was incredibly blatant. Meanwhile, nothing was done with Strange until the very end, Joker was the main antagonist yet again, Ra's was shoehorned in the story, and the conflict with Freeze was very forced and made no logical sense for them to fight briefly.

Assassins after Batman during a blizzard that shuts down Gotham and X-mas Eve and said assassins laying waste to the city to force Batman out. I'd say Asylum is the only one with a better setup but it squanders it away with that nonsense with Titan.

The hookclaw, Multiplayer mode, BatCSI, martial artists and ninja enemies were all good ideas. It's a shame that they didn't have more though.
>Best story and ending
The actual plot/story are by far better than any of the other games. Dini does write great interviews and dialogs but the end game in AA is retarded. City is stupid on too many fronts as well.
>Best set pieces
The Police Station, Hotel and Prison all provide some top tier moments in the series
>Best bosses
Outside of Freeze, no other boss was all that great in City. Origins doesn't have any boss that tries to tie the Predator mode and Combat together but is more consistent with its quality of fights.

It's worth a playthrough especially if you like the games and haven't played it

The giant ass bridge connecting the City map to the new "northern" section was so bad. The fast travel takes too long. The costume gets fucked up and you have no option to fix it.

Arkham Asylum is a fucking classic and the only thing I think it really fucked up on was the boss fights. Loved it back when I first played it, would probably still love it today if I went and played it a third time.

City is a strange. Mechanics wise, everything is better and more fun. More combat and predator options, more gadgets and upgrades, the grappling hook and glide is now just one of the best movement systems in games. And hey, boss fights that DON'T suck total dick for once.

But, the jump to open world was kind of a double edged sword. On one hand, you got cool shit like the Zsasz and Deadshot side missions, but you also lost the polish and sense of direction Asylum had. AA was very tight and focused, where as AC felt like it got too big for it's britches. I did really like the story mode, though.

Arkham Knight is a frustrating game. The combat, puzzles and predator stuff is polished to a mirror finish and is just an absolute blast to play.

All that being said, the Batmobile is the worst fucking shit ever and just gets shoved down your throat for half the game. Whoever thought that anyone would ever want to play a vehicular stealth section in any game, Batman or not, deserves to be shot. It majorly drags the game down, which is a shame because when Knight does something GOOD, it's really fucking good.

Im sure most people have posted the same thing but losing Dini as a writer killed Knight from the start.

The contrast in the quality of the story of Asylum and City to Knight is staggering they honestly shouldn't have moved forward with it without getting him back.

I actually enjoyed origins and found some of the character designs they did were better than Rocksteady. Me and a friend have been hopping WB Montreal get a chance to use the Knight open world to make a prequel to Asylum and are just given more money and time.

To be fair, the announcement trailer for Arkham City featured Joker so it's not like it came completely out of the blue and they gave him a nice send-off. Origins and Knight on the other hand were complete and utter bullshit. Knight was especially bad because it retroactively cheapened what was supposed to be a nice finale for the character in City.

My favorite video game series of all time, made me a fan of Batman (used to prefer Spider-Man) and the arkhamverse is still my favorite version of Batman himself. 99% of my computer wallpapers are Bamham related. I fight with /v/ everytime they are shitting on them. The only thing i really expect from each E3 is a new Bamham. For every 10 hours of videogame playtime, 8 or 9 are Bamham. I wish that the arkhamverse had the same impact in the main canon as the DCAU (shame that the Arkham Knight wasn't a OC donut steel, Rocksteady blew a great chance of leaving their mark in the canon).

That's what i can say about the Arkham series.

The only time you deal with the actual goings on of Arkham City are when Bruce gets thrown into the city for the first time and during Protocol 10.

Otherwise, Bruce only interacted with Ra's because he needed his blood for Joker's cure, and making/finding/using the cure made up the bulk of the plot.

It's because they literally just re-used his Origins model. That's another thing that pissed me off about Black Mask being shafted in Origins, you never actually saw him become Black Mask proper. The writers could have easily done something with him to make him have bigger presence in the game. Hell, they didn't even show him getting his mask burned into his face so he's still just a guy wearing a mask in Knight. Instead, they wanted to tell another Joker story that didn't really need telling and only used Black Mask so they could get away with an oh so clever twist.

The tank controls were abysmal. They literally fit nothing about Batman. If the Knight wants to fuck with Batman, why even include endless unmanned drones? Why not have people in them so Batman can't blow them up? And here's the thing, it'd be fine if it was a small part of the game, but it literally fucks up the flow to everything, even when you're on foot. There are tons of moments where you're taking on a "dungeon" for lack of a better word, but then you have to remote control the tank to move an elevator or something like that. It's like Rocksteady made this new mechanic and because it took up so much dev time, they forced it into anything they could. How the fuck can you defend Deathstroke being a tank battle?

The writing is by far the worst in the franchise and that includes a game with the laughable premise of a major section of a city metropolis being blocked off into a prison... including regions that have a fucking chemical plant and docks for easy escape. It fails to do anything substantial with plot threads teased from City, like Hush. You're seriously telling me that Jason Todd was somehow tortured for months under Gotham and Batman just accepted Jason was dead cause he got a tape that didn't even show him a body, just a gun shot from a man known for fake weapons? And then a few months later got a new Robin? Why is Nightwing getting beat by Penguin of all people? Why the hell does Batman even have to agree to any of Scarecrow's demands either? He took him down easily enough in the first game. There's no logical reason why he would go in and not just take him down and he fucking does after the unmasking anyway. Its lazy writing, with Rocksteady just wanting some stupid 2deep4u ending.

Arkham Knight was a total joke and honestly, I'd say the most disappointing game of this generation. All those delays and all that hype for nothing.

I hate how these games handled riddler and the riddler trophies in particular. There is no scenario where you can go through the game and solve all the puzzles as you progress, its zigzag shit where you have to run back and forth and look for them in every nook and cranny

look at Earth one vol.2 where riddler was an actually threatening psycho that locked people into deathtraps and gave them (albeit technically unsolvable) riddles to escape them. I want the arkham games to make riddler a quality sidequest full of actual deathtraps like the things with catwoman in AK instead of hundreds of shitty trophies

Really enjoyable games, barring a bad boss fight here and there.

Writing and plot has always been awful though, which reached a crescendo with Knight. The only two characters who were written particularly well were probably Jason and Harvey.

And Conroy was stunningly bad across the entire series. Completely flat and monotone, no emotion in anything at all. By AK I actually really disliked this series' take on Batman himself, but did like Arkham Origins' Bruce, who was written much better (and incidentally had a different voice actor).

I wanna see a Batman game that showcases Batman's normal operations in the city. None of the Bamham games are like this. In Bamham 1, it all takes place on Arkham Island. In Bamham 2, it's all in Arkham City, which is separate from the main city. In Bamham 3, it's Gotham, but it's a state of total war where the majority of the population has fled the city and the power balance has been completely shattered.

To clarify:

Arkham City was the name of prision built into one of the islands of Gotham by Ra's Al Guhl, Hugo Strange and Gotham's mayor Sharp (in that order). Thugs were actually trapped in there.

During Arkham Knight, Scarecrow menaced the city with filling it with his gas, so the GCPD evacuated the city.

In Origins, there was a curfew just because of the weather. And the open world was the shittiest of all. It would have been much better as a level based game, coming and going from the Batcave.

I still jump on City every now and then just to kick ass as Nightwing in the mini games. He was so well done in that game, from combat to art, much better than Knight. It's a shame he only had the side missions.
