She felt guilty about losing the book and guilt feels worse when it's being kept secret from everyone else. She wasn't acting out of rational self-interest, she was just trying to confess her secret so she could stop feeling bad about it. It's like having an infected abscess that bursts and causes new problems by spreading to other parts of your body. It's not good to have those new problems, but abscesses themselves get resolved by bursting.
