I know I'm extremely late to the party but I just watched it, tell me if I'm missing something here

>turns out the girl is a witch and she curses the entire village for centuries after that

I mean, I know what they mean, and I understand the intended logic (she only cursed them because they killed her) but it still seems like a botched way to tell your message.

Pretty good movie overall though, loved some of the character designs.
