There's good evidence that Elephants can differentiate between helpful and antagonistic members of humanity if they have prior experience - in one case a wounded elephant was escorted to a sanctuary by other elephants for treatment, they just showed up one day at the sanctuary approaching the people with an injured elephant and didn't leave until it had been patched up.
