Based on a discussion earlier, I decided to start a project I thought of nearly two years ago. I'm converting all the short stories from jpg to text (software is way more accurate than I had worried), cleaning them up, and then eventually I hope to format and make myself a print copy.

When I get them cleaned up I'll probably first drop them all in a google doc. Is this something that anyone else would be into for me to share here? Or is it just my own personal autism?

Cool, glad there's some interest. I'll probably take it leisurely, but even at just one short story a day while I watch Netflix, it should only take about two weeks. And let's be honest -- I'm probably gonna go full autist and do it in just a few days.

idk what the next step will be though. Even if I included the longer short stories -- Bottleneck, Mercy Mission, and Levels of Power -- there's probably not a whole lot of pages, since the Insider stories are so short. Ultimately it'd be cool to have a full-size hardcover to match the regular novels, but who knows.

Was anyone else annoyed with this scene? The Deathtroopers were doing fine until they ran into Captain Asian Aimbot. Then they started stumbling around like drunks and their blaster bolts were flying sideways out of their blasters.

I think it's simply a matter of literally every asset in the game being scanned in by photogrammetry and motion capture performers. The alien characters are even literally just scanned in from the old costumes and makeup. The cartoon characters would have to be completely added from scratch. Never gonna happen.

This is a lie spouted by Dice when they needed excuses for their first Battlefront. A lot of their assets are were not scanned in.

Pro-tip, there are no real Clone Suits either. They're either modelling from scratch, or they had replicas built.

They can create a practical Ahsoka face model if they want to, and scan that in if they absolutely must. I'm sure they had to for Luke/Leia/Han's faces too.

People are talking about all the various TLJ leaks and trying to piece them together with the newest teaser.

BUT

If those leaks are real, how come this whole "time for the Jedi to end" thing was NOWHERE in ANY of the leaks (to my knowledge)

I've not heard of that, or anything remotely comparable to that regarding Luke and his arc.

Doesn't that destroy the credibility of most-if-not-all leaks? Or at the very least, show that they are as outdated as "Luke's hand floating in space" was?

I think the true story of The Last Jedi is still very much unknown to us.

Depends on what meaning you carry out of the "end of the Jedi".

Does it mean a literal end? No more Force sensitives taught in the ways of the Force? Or just that Luke just won't teach Rey in the Jedi way, opting for something different instead?

I don't really know where people get the idea that Luke is done with the Force altogether. His "it's so much bigger" line and the way it was said implies enthusiasm. Forget the past, forget the Jedi, there is so much more to the Force that we can learn.

Luke's part of the story is the least covered by the leaks. We know some stuff that has to happen early on in the film, and we know about stuff Finn does with Rose on Canto Bight. But where Luke fits into it we don't know.

The jedi ending bit is clearly two different audio clips mashed together too. It's just another layer of dumbass mystery box stupidity.

I don't think Luke's "reluctant" phase will take long. Most of what we've seen in the trailer is from the first act, before Kylo and the KoR arrive on Ahch-to. When cut together with the Resistance plot, you'd esentially have to dance around Luke's reluctance, then do the Force vision, training, Jedi lore, the monster fight, Kylo's recovery and journey to the planet etc.

That's just a lot of stuff to unpack, especially since we know that Rey's training doesn't end with Kylo's arrival. You have to have the grand action scene and then more scenes with Rey and Kylo getting close before leaving Ahch-to.

I think Luke won't be screwing around for too long. "The Jedi must end" might be like a second scene with him, because we can see Rey's staff laying against the wall. He might invite her in, they talk, Luke explains that he doesn't want to repeat the Jedi's mistakes and then agrees to show her what he has learned on Ahch-to.

This usually isn't the case and when you remove text you often have to redraw it see here: https://mangahelpers.com/forum/threads/advanced-redrawing-methodes.2993177/

Can take hours to redraw everything if the text is in transparent bubbles or on the art.

There are also plenty of books that have gotten manga adaptations and no one has picked it up.

Its clear from other interviews he did at Celebration that Mark thought Luke was going to have a much more directly heroic role working alongside Leia to save Han, and admitted he was a little sad that didn't come to pass. That's not an indictment of the film, just him saying he was expecting one kind of story and role and instead he got another

TFA is still generating buzz. People will go see TLJ to learn OMG WHO ARE REY'S PARENTS AND WHO IS SNOKE AND IS LUKE EVUL OMG. The point where it'll come crashing down is when the answers inevitably won't confirm the headcanons of half the audience and salt begins to flow.

LOST was a mistake. They really should have went the Fantastic Beasts route and just make a simple story with sequel lead-ins, instead of crippling the first movie with their shadowplay and putting the sequels at risk by virtue of not being able to live up to whatever people dream up.

It also ends up leading to stillborn franchises. Tomorrowland had a lot of interesting lore and ideas, but it was never utilized all that well and yet so much of the marketing was focused on a literal mystery box of stuff tied to said backstory and trailers going "What's the deal with this pin?".

I was so pissed to find out that the "Walt was a member of this secret society of futurists that actually built the city of the future in an alternate dimension" aspect of some of that build up ended up only amounting to the Small World cameo in the final cut because to quote Lindelof "Having Walt Disney in the movie would make it seem like too much of a Disney movie".

Different strolks for different folks

The old design makes him look like a badass fighter. He comes off as much more physically intimidating because of the wide face and younger look. The new design makes him look weaker, but as such he looks more like the deep thing mastermind the should be.

I personally prefer the new one but I would never have been disappointed if we kept the old design

Its a more expressionist version of the face you just posted. Its got a similar chin and cheekbones, just more exaggerated. Now that might be part of the vaguely Rebels art style, or it might be that they're hammering home the "human like but obviously not human" aspect a bit more by having the whole face feel faintly off by human standards

It's worth remembering that they had an entire Boba movie planned and ready to start production before the director shit the bed and got fired from Disney. They even had a trailer ready for 2016(5?) SWC that they never showed once the movie was put on the back burner.

I have a bad feeling it's going to be a Bobba movie for that reason, but it's hard to say. If all they had was a script written, there is a good chance the next anthology will be something else, but if they already had a cast picked/props made, it's probably going to be the Fett movie next

I finally read the Poe Dameron comic series and honestly I don't know why you guys never talk about it. I had found the sequel era really boring before but this comic run actually made it interesting by making the universe feel bigger and introducing legitimately exciting concepts like the giant beings from the egg and the prison planet. Also, Terex is a good villain and I've never once seen him brought up in /swco/ before.

Tfa didn't sour me to the sequel trilogy, the sequel trilogy did that itself. I just can't get into "not rebels vs not imperials". It just feels like a discount OT.
Hopefully Episode 8 will change that. The shot of that salt planet or whatever it was looked like nothing I have seen in star wars before so it gave me hope. That's all I wanted from this trilogy, settings and tones I have never seen in SW before

In season 2 of Rebels both Vader and Palp are only just finding out Ahsoka is alive, but she is being hunted by an Inquisitor in her book, which I was under the impression took place before rebels started

Went into the first Mandalore arc with a blank slate. For some reason, everything there just seemed to rub me the wrong way. The people, the beliefs, the architecture (looks awesome, but feels claustrophobic as fuck; a problem I also have with Coruscant for some dumb reason). With each episode, I wound up liking the place less and less.

Yeah, Mandalore in TCW is weird. Lucas seemed to have this unofficial scale of morality where absolute pacifism even to your own active detriment was seen to be the most good anyone could achieve, but was equally shown to be painfully naive so the best good you could DO was to be like Obi-Wan and only fight if you have no other option.

That and the whole system just doesn't make sense as a Mandalorian invention, going off what was canon at the time, so it just comes off like a society that was dictated to the Mandalorians by the Republic after their wars with each other

Why do people in here not want a Boba movie based on him fucking up in ROTJ (ignoring that it wasn't supposedly have gritty badass villains) and messing up one other time when he was a kid (meanwhile nearly killing the leader of an order of plasma sword wielding space ninjas)? They need to set it after RotJ. If they set him up as super competent and then he fails at the sarlaac pit it leaves a sour taste. Have him escape the pit and recover and then do something all John Wick style and it would probably be received better. He was never raised mandalorian so the most I want to see out of that is mandos consider him pretty good. Maybe a clan would want him to join, but that's about it.

Besides, you can't really have a movie that has no tie-ins as part of an expanded and connected universe, it just doesn't work. Maybe, some time down the line, we'll get something like a heist movie set on Coruscant, but even that will have to tie in to some element of the story to give people grounding and to explain why it is this has the Star Wars name attached

There's been a lot of discussion about the Grey Jedi recently, about defining the term and whether they could exst in current canon.
A consensus around here seems to be that if a Jedi uses Dark Side techniques, then by definition, they aren't a Jedi, which I generally agree with but I'm led to ask, what exactly are the Dark Side techniques?
I ask mostly because of that scene in TCW where Obi-Wan, Mace and Anakin interrogate Cad Bane by overpowering his mind definitely comes across as a Dark Side technique, but Mace and Obi Wan are certainly Jedi (Anakin less so).

Which exposes another problem with determining Force alignment. Is it the intent, or the technique? Because I'd argue its the intent and use that matters, but I also know that just opens the door to a dozen donut steels that use Force Lightning but are still totally Jedi because they think warm fluffy staticy thoughts to generate lightning
On the other hand, techniques are often shared or at least replicated across both sides. Dark Side users are just as capable of mind reading as their Light counterparts, they simply rely on it less

As it stands, all the ancient setting stuff works really well with the Legends branding, the idea that these events are to the Star Wars universe, what Arthurian poems are to the British. Kotor, Tales of the Jedi, Bane Trilogy; they all still exist, you can still enjoy them.

I like the one they showed in the BF trailer. Always like the star destroyers but hated the bridge, so it was perfect to me. Also really liked the fighters in the comic based on the original scripts.

That would have been a neat story for Rebels, Phoenix Squadron hits up an Seppie ship graveyard to try and reactivate some of the battleships, only to realize that the damage is so extensive they could barely salvage one functional ship out of the dozen or so wrecks. And then the battle droids activate and conclusively kill that idea for good
Even just as a "and THAT'S why we don't try that plan" moment it would be neat

We know from Thrawn that the Empire was obsessed with collecting any and all reserves of metals and materiel that could be used in ship building as part of the Death Star project, if I was in charge of acquiring resources for that project the old CIS ship graveyards would be the first things I'd plunder. You'd be lucky if you found one bulkhead screwed to another by the time word got out the Empire was desperately interested in salvage from those old ships

There's something to be said for the advantage of a commanding view, especially on something with such a long nose as an ISD
But they could have been a little more recessed into the hull like the Raider, or perhaps off set to one side or the other so as to prevent the obvious conclusion of just shooting for the window in the middle

It's made of armor. That doesn't mean it's truly armored. It's exposed and an obvious target. Instead of making that huge profile they could expand around the rear section in a more circular fashion. and make the whole thing relatively more armored.

Dark side techniques maybe isn't a great term then...
The only true Dark Side ability seems to be Lightning, which can probably be classed as a special case that can only be brought about by hatred.
The Dark Side itself seems to manifest in the form of its seductive nature. It offers quick solutions and a promise of faster and greater power. If you look at it through this lense, it's more of a philosophy than a set of abilities. I think that really rules out the possibility of Grey Jedi more, because the Dark Side wouldn't be a toolkit you can dip into when convenient and then be a nice guy the rest of the time, the Dark Side is an outlook and way of life which you need to commit to in order to reap the rewards of. Sans Lightning, it doesn't offer exclusive techniques, just quicker results in return for your humanity. The Dark Side shouldn't be look at as the abilities themselves but the means of attaining them.

There is a secondary bridge more or less in the center mass of the ship. In battle, many of the senior officers would be sent there just in case. Same thing on real naval ships.

The sad fact is that the OT would not be anything special if released today.

Look at China, they only just got ANH in 2014, and it performed very mediocre.

Groundbreaking at the time, everything in the OT has since been done again, and again, and again, sometimes better (at least visually).

I'm not a huge lore guy and I don't know anything about the EU really, just the movies, TCW and Rebels and I really don't understand what the definition of a Grey Jedi is.

You can be a Jedi who doesn't strictly play by the rules, like Qui Gon. You can be a non-Jedi who's still Light Side aligned, like Ahsoka. You can be a neutral Force sensitive like the Bendu. What are the parameters for what defines a Grey Jedi and a something-else?

If we're defining Jedi as a member of the Jedi Order, you can theoretically be whatever the Hell you like and still be a Jedi. Anakin was defying the sacred tenet of possession and was a card carrying member of the Jedi until the Mace Window incident. You could be a secret Dark Side-Jedi if you pulled off a Sheev scheme and nobody finds out.
Can Ezra really ever be counted as a true Jedi if the Order is disbanded? He can carry on the traditions to the letter but if there's no Jedi Order can there be any Jedi?

And if there can be Jedi without the Order, then why can't there be Sith after the Prophecy?

As far as I can tell, the term Jedi is used too loosely to define either a member of the Jedi Order or a generally good person who wields the force and has a lightsaber, to accurately describe what a Grey Jedi is without people's interpretations causing argument.

BY DEFINITION, that is what a Jedi is, they follow the light side. A Jedi using the dark side is like a Catholic using Buddist or Islamic prayers. It's completely inaccurate to the religion. A contradiction.

Actually the prequels were just better received.

Possibly for their more modern visuals, but also because of the stronger eastern influence so the movies may actually have been received better in Asia for cultural reasons.

You have hit the nail on the head there, people use Jedi as short hand for "good aligned Force user with a lightsaber" when in reality it refers to someone who follows a very specific and constricting religious lifestyle. Although I'd disagree with your point about Anakin, he might have been officially a Jedi but he was still breaking one of their core tenets so he was really "only a Jedi until the truth comes out". Same for Palpatine, you can bluff about your alignment but you can't change what it is on the sheet to suit your lie.

And honestly, I'm not sure what the hell Ezra is, or what he was meant to be. He and Kanan regularly dance around the subject of whether or not they are actually Jedi, to the point I'd argue that in-universe they've both fallen victim to that tendency to just use Jedi as a generic blanket term for Force using, lightsaber swinging do-gooder .
Ultimately Grey Jedi is a pointless label and it would be far better for both fans and for the franchise as a whole to stop using 'Jedi' as a generic term and embrace Luke's words in the TLJ teaser: "Its so much bigger"

Most of the Rebellion DID get killed at Scariff.

The few survivors that made it back to Yavin IV had to immediately strike at the Death Star with what little crew and ships they had left.

Only then, after the Death Star was destroyed, did the Rebel Alliance begin to form in to a larger force that could start to match Imperial numbers in firefights.

Sure, it happens in ANH and ROTJ too, but in both those movies it's explained and justified in the movies themselves or through expanded content or novelizations.

ANH: Stormtroopers lose on the Death Star because Tarkin orders them to not kill the heroes. Death Star blown up by a literal Force miracle and Tarkin's own overconfidence.

ROTJ: Empire isn't whipped by Ewoks, they actually annihilate almost all of them and win on the ground. A-Wing hits the Executor bridge, backup bridges can't take over in time, it crashes. Couldn't destroy the Rebels because Palpatine ordered Piett not to. Death Star destroyed and Palpatine dead by his own overconfidence.

In Rogue One, the Empire loses just because.

Star Destroyers are good, but even they need time to focus their firepower onto multiple small targets. And the Star Destroyer was crippled by an ion torpedo, allowing the Lightbringer to effectively shunt the one ISD into the other.
Just because the numbers are weighted in the Empire's favour doesn't mean they would win automatically. Shit, the fact that the Empire genuinely believes that "more numbers are better numbers" is one of their biggest downfalls and something the Rebels regularly exploit

Scarif is the first major victory against the Empire.

Until this point, the Empire has slaughtered every single attack or rebel force, such as the Twi'leks on Ryloth.

The Rebels have only managed to win very small victories, as seen in Rebels.

But actual battles? Scarif is the first time the Rebels have ever managed to defeat so many enemies in pure combat, and escape to live another day. And even then they had to run the second they could, the Empire still technically "won" Scarif by sheer overwhelming numbers.

Except there was, in fact it was the crux of the entire fucking plan
The first Star Destroyer (lets call it SD-A for short), the one that got rammed, had been disabled by an ion attack. That's basically the Star Wars version of an EMP, just in case you don't know, so its scopes and engines were down meaning it could neither detect the Hammerhead nor maneuver against it.
Meanwhile, the Lightbringer was smart enough to fly around SD-A's far side, so as to prevent the second Star Destroyer (SD-B lets say) which was still online from engaging it because SD-B couldn't fire without risk of hitting SD-A
By the time both commanders could react, Lightbringer had made contact with SD-A and was busy ramming it into SD-B. Total surprise on account of a totally unorthodox and completely non-standard tactic

The Hammerhead, which is a stupidly overbuilt and heavily armored ship, then rammed the thickest part of its armour square into the side of the Star Destroyer, allowing for the Hammerhead to direct the course of the Star Destroyers drift
But you're just going to ignore this post, or talk about everything other than the core element that makes the plan work aren't you? Ion weapons have been a thing since ESB anon, or do you not accept that they worked there too?

I appreciate the attempt to take the nuclear weapons metaphor reading of the Death Star (something reinforced by Rogue One) and taking it to its logical conclusion by having Starkiller basically be a space laser ICBM but its probably one of the dumbest super weapons in Star Wars. And that is saying something

A lot of early leaks suggested that Leia had become a violent extremist and a secondary villain in the film who wanted to kill Rey and Finn. Seems to line up with that ship. Guess they decided that making Leia and the new Rebels just as bad as the First Order was going too far. Then again, Rogue One plays with that notion a lot by having the Rebels doing shit like suicide bombing, torturing prisoners, and killing civilians to keep them quiet. And with Luke seemingly turning his back on the Jedi and light side in TLJ it seems like they haven't abandoned the thought entirely.

I think Leia willingly using a massive invasion ship like that would have been too far, but I'm glad they're going more morally grey. One of my big issues with TFA is no one seems to stop and think (well, shit, in general that's a huge problem) about how blatantly illegal every single thing the Resistance does is, and how right the First Order are to want Leia and her band of wannabe heroes crushed or in chains to answer for their bullshit
Hopefully the sequels will actually build a little on that, remind us that the Resistance is a bunch of gloryhounds raised on the war stories of their Rebel parents following the lead of a washed up ex-Senator seeking the easy glory of her wartime days

I think it would have been very interesting if there was a bit of role reversal where instead of the First Order having a planet killing super weapon it was the Resistance. Who knows? Maybe that'll still happen in Episode 9 and Luke and Rey and whoever else has to stop them. The natural end point to this war from my perspective is mutually assured destruction because both sides are entrenched in wanting vengeance and retribution.

A huge underlying theme of the ST that I've noticed is exactly what you just said basically. The kids and grandkids of people who fought for or against the Empire are now becoming extremists playing at war to live up to all the stories they grew up with. All the First Order officers look like teenagers, and I'm confident that's intentional.

This is an old fallacy. If the film were a cartoon, like say Genndy Wars, I'd concede the point, since toon physics are in constant effect on pretty much every level.

Which highlights another issue with TFA, the Resistance is a fucking stupid title that reeks of egotism and projection
On whose behalf are the Resistance resisting? Who are they seeking to liberate? For all we know the First Order's worlds are places like Vardos that see the benefits of a strong regime and welcomed the not-Empire. Shit, just judging from the aesthetic I'd say a lot of the First Order was influence and grew from places like Vardos

Yeah, there is a distinct theme of "sins of the father being passed onto the son" about the whole affair. Shit, look at Hux, he looks barely 30 but he's still far and away the oldest FO officer we saw. And its clear from Aftermath that Brendol clearly takes after dear old dad in a lot of ways, especially in terms of how they approached training soldiers
Its a really neat theme that I hope they build on in TLJ, especially now that Rey is about to meet one of these storied heroes and realize he isn't all he's cracked up to be

My hope is that's when Iden turns against the Sentinel robot that we saw in the trailer, as she realizes the Emperor was absolutely bug fuck but that Vardos is physical proof that the Empire can and has done good for people, and that its worth fighting
I don't know, guess I'm just trying to pre-emptively reason away the "redemption" line from the website. I really want Iden to stay Imp, it would be neat if she was ordered to attack her home planet and decided to redeem herself by defying the pointlessly destructive orders of the Contingency

Yep. I had to watch the movie twice to confirm that it wasn't actually Coruscant they'd just blown up
JJ's mystery box fixation is the chief reason TFA is being remembered so poorly right now. Even basic shit like "what was Leia's connection to the New Republic?" or "what was the ultimate plan of the Resistance?" took way too long to tease out, its fucking dumb
