Consanguineous marriage has been steadily declining since the late Edo period, going from an estimated 15-20% nationwide in 1850 to 1.3% at the time of the last study in 1983. This is however counting ALL consanguineous marriages within 10 degrees (1st cousin falls in the 4th degree, 10th degree is for example 4th cousins or 3rd cousins twice removed), of which 4th degree accounted for about 2/5th.
Compare that to Syria where the rate of 1st cousin marriage is 20.9% and the overall consanguineous marriage rate is 35.4% according to a study from 2009.
