Why don't the humans in this show care about anything? Why are they so frustratingly stupid? Why is it that nobody in this show acts rational at all? All this freaky shit happens and they don't seem to care or look for a way to prevent it. Why haven't they at least tried to do something to fight against rock monsters instead of just letting the Crystal Gems take care of it? Do they even know the Crystal Gems? Have they even tried talking to them about the rock monsters?

it's the biggest suspension-of-disbelief breaking element of the show, but still sort of forgivable if you're willing to read a fair amount into the nature of the world. eg. it hasn't been explicitly stated, but the history of the Gem War and the presence of Gem Fauna on the planet being a well known and accepted fact of life by humanity (not just Greg). there is some evidence for it eg. Mrs. Maheswaran reacting with apparent knowing comprehension when she has the gem mutants explained to her, gems on the currency, books in the library about it.

also, it's never come up yet, but common firearms would most likely insta-poof most gem forms, and shatter gems, so their lack of constant terror at their broad circumstance (living in a world riddled with corrupted gem monsters) may not be entirely irrational.

Also there is the fact Rock Monsters don't attack human society, they are basically wild animals that live in places far from human habitation.

The only reason so many appear around the Beach City is because they are attracted to the temple and the presence of other gems specifically, the presence of humans is pretty much inconsequential.

You notice the Frankenstein gem was pretty passive when the doctor woman was examining it? Only freaked out and got grabby when another gem appeared.

corrupted gems are different from gem mutants. gem mutants 100% canonically seek out other gems, but corrupted gems seem to mostly just act like random xeno fauna (with some possibly more-sapient exceptions, eg. the beetles). and then there are unique gem-powered artifacts like Lapis' Mirror and The Desert Glass.

This kind of bugs me, but given that the gems house predates the town I assume it is one of those weird things all the town folk are use to given it has been that way for as long as anyone can remember.

That said it would still stand that new people from out of town would have some more notable reaction of some kind.

I would expect a FBI guy keeping tabs on them or something, but not sure how big of a deal that would be given the "aliens" haven't done anything of note in two centuries, so at some point the agency would lose interest. But there would still be plenty of reason to freak-out with those corrupted gem monsters.

Speaking of which whatever happened to those monsters of the week, did they finally capture them all? I mean they have been hunting them for thousands of years and there is a finite number of them, so at some point that should be taken care of.

But honestly I find Onion to be a far more strange and disrupting element then the flat townsfolk reactions.

This show had so much potential for so long and now it just hurts. Steven Universe season 1 was really excellent and seemed to know what it was doing and how to convey it's message. "Love Letters" marks the point in the show where things slowing began to take a turn for the worse, which was only cemented by "Sworn to the Sword."

Steven Universe really gets under my skin because it was a show that I really enjoyed and looked forward to watching, and now the vision for the show that I fell in love with is gone. It sucks.

Gems were around way before then. Garnet and Pearl themselves are 5000+ years old and were probably young when the rebellion started. But HW had already colonized many planets at that point. White diamond owns most of them.

Connie and her parents live within driving distance for Greg to be able to drive their in a short amount of time or for Connie to commute their by herself from time to time.

The show is just frustrating it's world is so inconsistent and weird and the humans have to be incredibly stupid for the show to work. So this tourist town that people visit nobody is filming the magic gem aliens fight things ON THE DAM BEACH. No Tourists, No locals nobody is filming the weird shit that happens and putting it on youtube. How about the multiple times very large objects come from space and would easily be tracked by any type of space program, observatory or PERSON LOOKING UP AT THE GIANT FUCKING THING IN THE SKY from a town over. How about giant bodies of water like the ocean being turned into a giant pillar that reaches incredibly high into the sky thats not noticed either.

Lets just assume that the Government doesn't know of any Gem ruins or anything. enough weird shit happens the place should constantly be swarming with scientists or government agents to work out why ufos are constantly entering here.

No, but they ARE pretty much small rocks. An ordinary rock damn near shattered Amethyst, and that was just a simple fall onto it - relative speed probably wasn't more than 25 or 30 m/s.
Even if a bullet can't poof a Gem, it sure as hell can shatter one, probably better than Bismuth's shatterer thing.

If they can hid their gem inside their hard light body this could offer significant protection from such attacks, or at least make it a lot harder to hit, but I haven't seen this ever done.

Given this I would see the gems posing and above average threat level compared to a person, but nothing a small team of trained soldier couldn't handle with basic Intel.

* can't see the gem to shoot it directly, bust out a few close range high shrapnel claymores and statistcally that gems going to get shattered.

So they could just put their gem inside an armored box that they hide inside their body, then increase the hard light photonic force value multiplier as high as they can. At which point their only major weakness is doubled armored, hidden in their body and likely moving in a random pattern. That would make it darn near impossible to kill them without resorting to very heavy ordinance. Not nuke level, but you'd still might need to call in an airstike to get it done. Personnel explosive options may or may not be enough depending on how hard that armor is.

Then again swords seem to hurt them.

Real humans struggle with emotions and rationality everyday, if anything it would deepen the character arcs extremely in the show.

But all it needs is some tongue in cheek pointing to its own flaws, and that would be enough to make it more logical and relateable. And it could even bring some exposition to its lore.

Gems have pretty consistently shown to be weak to piercing/slashing attacks and constriction, but resistant to blunt force. The only time we've seen a gem poofed from blunt force is Amethyst, whom was popped by Jasper's headbutt in mid-air, and Lapis, but that might just be a non-accurate representation of events.

Hopefully later it'll get better writers and a more mature air to it that isn't riddled with "muh crying" and horrible pacing.

I wouldn't mind some kind of universal war mosh pit. With a number of lesser factions to the diamonds facing off for control. Each with their own principles and morals. Could still kinda fit into that Steven Universe mold. Have gem splinter factions and maybe some kind of federation for organic beings that resists non-organic/genocidal tyranny.

Sugahritus should have written some extensive lore beforehand, worked that out in at least the bases, and leave enough room for change, say for plotlines etc.

They did the same with Gravity Balls, write the lore and characters first(Basic guidelines that rule out certain changes, like how Dipper and Mabel, no matter how angry, will always love each other as borhter and sister etc.) out beforehand, and then continue with the plotlines.

Great Idea, but got rushed too much before any lore foundation was actually build out.

Bibles are pretty typical for shows, so I doubt there isn't one. It is far more likely that the crew view a lot of the information as unnecessary. Alternatively what we are getting is the actual lore outlined in the bible and Sugar just sucks at her job.

There was a writer who got fired for stealth forcing a ship(and other reasons too probs) into the stories, with sugulita's characters nonetheless, so I wouldn't put the idea next to me, that she is somewhat of a pushover, or far too nice for her own good.

I think she is either not stern enough to drive her lore as intended through, or she simply didn't flesh out enough before it got hooked for production.

Either way it's either some serious teasing that is edging on getting the show cancelled before a proper ending, or she really is far too casual with her lore.

Presumably she picked up a lot of her bad habits from Pendleton Ward while she was on AT, so it isn't that she didn't get the wisdom of the "experienced generation", but rather that she got the wrong wisdom. SU is a show that is heavily reliant on world building, inter-character drama and really long form storytelling. While AT did one of those reasonably well it failed at the other two. This is why I suggested Weisman would have been a good fit. His shows all feature those elements and are all regarded fairly well, with Young Justice being the weakest and even then it is still a good show.

Seeing how that ruby stole her ship back, it could pave a way to a good story arc involving homeworld(Even the antagonists base of origin's name sounds like just a working title).

My idea would be that the show gives the characters a reality check when they encounter white diamond, as in that crying and care-bear stares aren't enough to resolve the feud.

And explain how homeworld actually lost against a small army.

Homeworld doesn't seem to have much of a tech advantage and for a caste based society the promises of freedom and equality are quite attractive. On top of that it seems like the gems don't have a very large population and likely has other conflicts to deal with, given you don't really need a standing army or super weapons if you are unchallenged. Additionally Rose was pretty goddamned broken and the war shut off production of their new and better Quartz soldiers.

Because Rose Quartz was most likely a new gem class, made by Pink Diamond, who was most likely still rather new to the whole colonization thing. SHe was probably also rather new to the whole "making new gems" thing.

In my opinion she would be a bad writer in the sense that the emotions are too big and don't have enough natural build-up prior to the outburst to warrent the size, however, the execution of said outbursts(visualy, but also the VA, and music styles are well chosen) and the handling afterwards, show that with the right direction, she can crystallise her ideas in a beautiful presentation.
Thus rather the first than the latter.

She just needs not to tone down the sadness, but rather showcase why it happens in the first place, take an arc for the build up, and let the ending be the release, but make it feel human all the way through.

I'm inclined to believe Lapis is a unique case. For some reason Amy did not retreat to her gem. Amy's symptoms were her physical form degrading, but her gemstone did not worsen except that time she hit it again. Lapis presumably stayed in her cracked gem for thousands of years before reforming, so I'm thinking she stabilized.

There's just so much we don't know about the gem physiology/lore. It's really weird seeing people bitch about the writing as if the series has concluded.

I wonder if this was the same for Avatar and GF when they were still airing.

When it comes to running a show yeah, but as an artist and comic writer she's far better. Pug Davis had much more thought put into it than SU's worldbuilding.

I feel like that's more common in recent episodes. Very very flat conversational dialogue that just feels tacked on to fill in the scene.

I think earlier episodes had more wacky jokes I enjoyed, but then again that style of humor turned off a lot of people.

I have a theory that the gems are mind controlling the population, and thats going to be a ronaldo episode. Might be the main reason his character exists.

The lighthouse is emitting a beam that makes humans ignore the gems, think of them as not weird. Its been going on for centuries. There is a significant amount of gem stuff and damage around. all untouched for thousands of years.

Although, it would be funny if the moment the lighthouse stops working everyone stops whatever they're doing, frozen in place for a second or 2 as they realise everything that has happen both in the city and the world, all the shit that they went through and didn't even thought about it, the monsters, the alien invation and what it implies and all the times they almost die due to what the gems caused here

And, after a short ominous silence, they all start screaming from the top of their lungs and start crying inconsolably, everybody is in hysterics and defeated on the ground as everything bad and out of place comes rushing back and everything makes sense in this collective moment of clarity

All of this in a worldwide scale, now they all know just how fucked they are

I didn't find season 1 to be anything special. Well executed for what it was but not anything I'd want to watch if it was just more of that. Before I dropped it, I was interested in the story and where it was going to go from there but I ended up disappointed and largely frustrated with plenty of elements in it. I'm not a big fan of the bright-contrast colored shortstacks that slowly replaced the main cast. It's almost like watching Teen Titans and seeing the characters gradually turn into the TTG cast episode by episode.

My guess is that corrupted gem are just severely weaker than normal gems bcus we've seen how resilient they can be with rubies surviving in the vacuum of space as well as atmospheric impact, jasper surviving from being at the center of a massive explosion a small well as being knocked beyond the horizon by lapis, garnet swimming in molten Magma etc The only bullshit moment I can think where that's thrown out the window was when amethyst gem cracked from falling on a rock

I think another legit question any of us can ask about the humans we know in SU is:

Does Beach City ever have ANY emergency services, ESPECIALLY Law Enforcement?

Asides from wondering and questioning as to why Beach City is even considered a city, how would Beach City ever deal with a criminal situation? And I'm betting the Gems probably wouldn't interfere in a criminal-shootout situation because Garnet may actually make a good point or guess that they might end up causing more collateral damage if they interfere.

Hell never have I personally seen a patrol man or patrol car around doing any routinely patrols and such, and no visible cops around. No way would the concept of crime not exist in SU's Earth. Hell Beach City might aswell be an easy target for any heavily armed criminals looking for a quick score.

There's like 15 people living there, but somehow they have an arcade, amusement park a fast food restaurant that only serves french fries a cinema and maybe theater and a pizza place with delivery service

Beach city somehow is still alive only becouse of turist, but i never see any turist in the actual beach, and even then in the non-turist that city should go bankrupt

Don't forget a hospital or a medical center, even if Beach City is never really a city and its just a quirky name thought up by quirky beach bums in-universe. With the lack of nearby law enforcement, some heavily armed criminals with a good getaway vehicle could practically pull off a perfect heist by robbing the retail establishments of Beach City dry, at gunpoint.

And its doubtful the people of Beach City own firearms or any weapons to defend themselves considering certain undertones.

So yes, three to four or five heavily armed men with kalashnikovs, body armor and lots of ammo could raid the town, loot the establishments and rob the few permanent inhabitants dry at gunpoint. And the Gems wouldn't be reliable in dealing such a situation since they might be out in a mission at such a time.

Humans actually can survive a pretty decent amount of spots getting hit by guns. Also, a gem poofs given suitable damage to its hologram body, too. That means any suitable shot will incapacitate them. At best, one shot breaks a gem and kills it. At worst, two. One to get it to poof and another to break the stone.

Of all the potential this show had and wasted, Peridot's character arc hits me the hardest in its misdirection.

She had a perfect compromise regarding the cluster and Earth's resources. YD was such an obtuse stick in the mud trying to keep together a broken empire it would've been smart to consider something new and different.

In the end, it's still impressive she braved surviving a failed suicide mission and the loss and destruction of her tools and ship - in the face of hostiles, no less. The cluster arc's confusion was some bullshit too. Fuck that noise and fuck Steven.

I think the issue is that the plot has become too Simpletonian, like the writers just don't see behind their noses or them comfort zone, heck the world of SU feels too isolated and empty, and things like humans not having interaction with the bad gems or such, feels like a lack of connection, aside from explanation.

Lapises are apparently made to terraform planets on their own, and from on-screen activity, they can do it pretty fast. They seem to be very rare (how many planets need to be transformed at once?) and built with insecurity issues to prevent them from realizing that they can take over whenever they want. So yeah, unique case.
