You could watch the first 2 episodes or movie or whatever, then take some of the highlight episodes people are mentioning here if you feel like it, then go to the new season.

I think you could probably watch the new season with no background and have an interesting experience; if you want to go back afterwards and watch the episodic and generally self-contained adventures of the previous 4 seasons you could do that.

Watching the whole show will increase your emotional investment but almost nothing plot or overarching continuity wise happens after the premiere in the 4 initial seasons.

I just watched every episode, and found myself enjoying every one short of totoro ripoff, which was easily the worst.
I recommend watching everything and not skipping anything, as the atmosphere and general mood of the series combined with the characters and action make everything worth watching. Well, outside of maybe the totoro episode.

S01 E11 Jack and the Scotsman

Introduction of a side character that is confirmed to be coming back in season 5.

S02 E01 Jack Learns to Jump Good

Reveals the existence of multiple time portals, giving something Jack can search for.

That's all you need in order to understand the new season, but you're really missing out on a lot of good action.

This does not a straight man prove since these are shows of affection not lust or love. All this proves is that you read heterosexuality into affectionate scenes with men and women.

The scene with Josephine is politeness and waming up to someone complimenting you, the girl kisses him not the other way around which cannot judge Jack's feelings towards her. Fem-Aku can be seen as more of an accomplice when "she" helps him out on his quest to find a way back home and also saves his life in the quicksand, there is no proof that he has any romantic feelings towards fem-Aku.

He might as well be gay. or bisexual, I'll give you that

I don't know, Josephine was kind of feeling up on his arm (a sexual advancement) and he seemed to enjoy it.

I agree that his interactions with fem-Aku are debatable though.

Regardless, we don't have any confirmation that he's gay either. Aside from the Scotsman's wife making some underlying comments and jokes, I can't recall anything else.

So overall, it's non-important to the plot and his character development - leaving it open to interpretation. Though there are more hints implying hetero-sexuality, regardless if they're vague or not.

On the other hand I can't see Jack getting into a relationship anyway since he's constantly on the run from Aku. He wouldn't want to put any loved ones or friends in that kind of danger (unless if they can clearly handle themselves in a fight, like the Scotsman.)

I didn't, because jack has defeated much tougher opponents throughout the series. If this episode was earlier on it might've made more sense, but most of the enemies jack's had to go up against were a lot tougher than a bunch of 50s robots and he only went down so the totoro ripoff had a reason to be there and save him.

You can watch the plot-heavy or fan favorite ones if you want to.

Hell, you can do that for all 4 seasons since it's an episodic show, though I don't recommend it.
