>>90953472This entire plot line is them making the worst possible choice at every opportunity, while Willis tries use it to make political points. Like I said, it just pisses me off because every decision they've made has been the wrong one, for the wrong reasons. Some of them are understandable, i.e. Joyce afraid of being pulled out of college. Some of them, like spreading an unidentifiable photo of some guy with a scar, are retarded and actually damaging to their cause.
If Willis actually wanted to do something feminist with this plot, he should have had Joyce go to the cops. Answer the questions, show it as not enjoyable, because it's not. It's uncomfortable and unpleasant... and necessary.
You can play the privilege card by having Ryan skate on these charges, because his parents are well-connected and bury it. Fuck, even say there's not enough evidence to do anything (even though Willis has said Ryan use rohypnol on Joyce and that stays in your bloodstream for like 3 days after being dosed).
Then you can call that shit back. Maybe Ryan attempts to, or actually does rape another girl. Give Joyce agency. Have her convince the victim to go to the police, even though she knows it's not a fun thing. This time, though, between Joyce's earlier report and the new victim's testimony, Ryan gets buried.
There, you've got a perfect plotline with a good theme. "Privilege sucks and scumbags can use it to skate free when they shouldn't, but report the crime anyways. Even if you don't get justice, you can help the next person bury these fuckers. If you don't do anything, these shitbags will just keep getting away with it and NOBODY gets justice."
Instead, we've got 'durr the system won't help you, the authorities won't help you - vigilante justice is the only way to get revenge, so start spreading rumours, folks!"
