I think I can finally articulate why Season 3 was such a goddamn letdown up to this point. That is to say, Filoni had to stop doing saber fights and didn't think of what to replace them with.

Last season we had three jedi and four dark siders, and the show has been using lightsaber duels as a crutch action wise from the beginning. But someone reminded them that Luke doesn't fight a bunch of other guys in the films so they tried to scale back(as opposed to him meeting them in the EU like he did before). But they were so used to just doing Saber duels they just didn't know what else would come up.

Which is why so much of this season comes off as filler. They don't know what works so they're just throwing crap against the wall. Lets see if people like Chopper, or Maul, or if we can get people to actually like Sabine. I'm interpreting the late renewal this year as just more proof. They aren't starting production until they have a firmer grasp on direction. Even on Rebels Recon, Filoni basically talk about last weeks episode by saying yeah, he knows NOW what won't go over well but didn't then.

I'm not super charitable to Filoni and company, but it's taken them a while to get onto the thing that was obvious to everyone else. The Y wing episode was well received outside autists who complain about Star Destroyers taking damage. That's because if you aren't doing a duel the second thing is usually a dogfighting sequence but they've done essentially none of that outside stock TIE's besides one use of the Defender, and even that not often, and literally everyone thinks Phoenix Squadron is worthless due to how useless they seem to be. That it probably took months for them to see that doesn't speak well of them.

I mean this isn't like a Stackpole project. Every pilot doesn't have a name or identity. When a random guy gets shot down or goes missing you aren't worried because that's Lujayne or Nawara or any of the dozens of other people who got a name and a backstory even if they died ten pages later. They're literally just random extras.

The death of Phoenix Squadron would have no weight.

There are ok episodes but lets not pretend this season hasn't been all over the place. Thrawn gets built up as this big force menacing the rebels then he'll disappear for weeks worth of episodes at a time so we can go on a treasure hunt or deal with a totally unrelated group of imperials or just see what a minor side character is up to. There's not a lot of focus.

And the saber fights were a crutch, a lot of them weren't that great. The SS and other guy kinda just showed up whenever things needed to be tense. One episode literally opened with them fighting for what was clearly just "well we needed them to be chased and this was kinda menacing". After a while they kind of just became Team Rocket since they could fight the rebels that often but nobody got a scratch.

If it were me I'd kill either him or Kanan. Zeb doesn't add much and his Arc is already done anyway, but Kanan just needs to bite the dust so Ezra can move on and keep developing. Ezra simply can't keep going living in Kanans shadow.

Where to start, really? What's the point of this show? The point is that there is none. It doesn't exist to sell toys, because Hasbro doesn't make any fucking toys. It's not giving us any new insight into the Dark Times era. It skips potential awesome moments time and fucking time again. Mothma's speech? Nope. Saw's legs? Nope. Maul duel? Nope. Why? Because Disney follows a "less is more" bullshit ideology.

At this point what is Ezra even doing for them? He's a junior officer with nobody to command, using flying skills but he doesn't even have a fighter, in a squadron led by a woman who also doesn't even have a fighter, acting as a close combat specialist in a squad with two other people who already do that.

His promotion at the beginning of the season was more or less symbolic honestly. He's a lieutenant with no grunts.

I mean it's not like they don't have named characters who just never show up. Iron Squadron could at least do something at some point. Or Zaire could come back since he also had a bunch of guys who didn't quite make up a complete team. Or the red headed trap from the UK comics.

Between all of them that's a ship, an intelligence specialist, a mechanic, a well rounded soldier or two, some pilots, and a Jedi. It's a hell of a lot more well rounded than the lopsided mess the Ghost Team currently has and with people to spare.

Luke is the chosen one ...from a certain point of view.

Maul couldn't exactly have a lengthy conversation and Obi-Wan was obviously never going to clarify. Or clarify there would therefore technically be two new chosen ones. All Maul would have known is this was the planet Anakin came from and Anakin was the chosen one. Therefore this must have something to do with Anakin or someone related, and therefore be about the chosen one.

I think Dave might just be really attached to the crew. He came up with the idea for this series when The Clone Wars was being pitched, but the show could really improve by branching out from them like The Clone Wars episodes which featured important episodes that weren't about Anakin, Obi-Wan, or Ahsoka.

Obi-Wan's lost faith in Anakin ever coming back at this point, so from his point of view Luke IS the Chosen One, he just ends up being wrong of course and Luke ends up being right that there is still good in Anakin.

Luke however does end up being the catalyist that allows Anakin to finally break free of the Dark Side and fulfill his true destiny though.

I hate the stupid overly coreographed fights in the prequels that go on forever but this was shot in the worst way possible.

I've rewatched it a couple of times and I still can't figure out how Maul dies. It looks like he gets cut in half vertically (you see it's like poetry, it rhymes) but then he's able to talk to Kenobi before he dies? Like his lightsaber gets sliced in half, but why wasn't he? I genuinely can't think of an explanation.

Honestly, I liked the conclusion to Maul's character. Both he and Obi Wan had lost everything to the Sith/instability of the force. Maul lost all of these high aspirations while Kenobi lost his order and his apprentice.

The last exchange almost made it seem that they were on the same side, along with the shot of the twin moons. They were both victimized by Sidious and the powers that be, and they both chose to resist it. It was nice to let Maul pass on in a way that almost made him seem like a good guy, or at least someone that the fans rooted for.

The fight was fine. Especially the Mexican Standoff style opening to it.
Considering the amount of influence Kurosawa had on Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, and how quickly standoffs in those films happened, the whole fight being over in less than 10 seconds after Maul made the first move was absolutely fine.

For fucks sake, Maul wasn't cut at all. It was a symbolic destruction of the hate that kept him alive all these years.

He was finally able to move past it, when he saw hope in the Chosen One being alive, and being there to defeat the sith.

That's why Obi-Wan suddenly cared, because he saw Maul release the hate within himself, and die peacefully. If he wasn't filled with rage, he would have died in the sand then and there, or any numerous times such as when he was a bottomless fuccboi in the trash.

Yeah, and it looks like they were kind of going for that but realized they didn't have much time in the episode, so the staredown is only a few seconds.

But since a significant portion of the episode is Ezra wandering around, they could have cut that down and devoted more time to the confrontation. There's no way they can build Leone-style tension because we know one of them is guaranteed to survive, but I still would've liked to have seen them stare down a bit while the music builds- and then the brief fight happening as-is.

Who could they possibly use for an antagonist that holds as much weight as either of them? Someone they can not only use but use as freely as they want because they aren't tied to the movies. They don't need a season, or more, long single antagonist.
Like the Gold squadron pilot implied, Phoenix squadron's flashy moves hitting the Empire are making it hard for other rebel groups. Watch next season be more about building up Rebellion wide capabilities than about the exploits of the Ghost's crew as a team. Perhaps even split them up most of the time by having them loaned out to other groups for specific missions.

Anyway, a big flashy fight would've been stupid and unnecessary. The show is about a single cast of characters, Maul and Obi-Wan are guest stars. My only issues with the episode were Maul just kinda letting Obi-Wan talk to Ezra and tell him to fuck off. He should've stuck around, not to participate, but just as a witness.

And the Lars homestead felt like pandering.

Something like that would've been nice. The entire episode from Maul's perspective, Ezra and company's appearances are kept to the minimum if at all.

Have most of the episode be Maul searching Tattooine for his old adversary, and subtly imply that he's been at it for months, and is so, so tired.

Have them finally encounter each other after all this time, stare one another down down, build up to the climactic battle. I'd prefer if the battle lasted a bit longer than it did here, but it could end more or less the same.

The whole episode could be mostly wordless, too. Keep the dialogue to the very minimum. Let us see, and experience how far Maul has fallen, and how this battle - live or die, win or lose - is all he has to keep him going at this point. I mean, if this is his sendoff, I'd prefer if the episode was all about his last day.

Maybe that's too ambitious for this show, but then again, they also wanted to do "Through Imperial Eyes" as a full first-person episode shot entirely from Kallus' perspective. Though, they didn't go through with it, so maybe anything outside the norm is too ambitious.

Really though, it doesn't have to be anything like I suggested. The main issue is that they simply haven't given Maul enough time to really develop, or well, do anything, since he reappeared on the show last finale. It's so disappointing too, especially how the promotional art for this season suggested that Maul would be a bigger threat than Thrawn. Or at the very least, a more personal antagonist to his distant threat.

But the whole season feels like a lot of wasted opportunities anyway. This is just another to add to the list.

The big bad's have better things to do, apparently. Partly because their every appearance has to be vetted to fit into decades of canon and partly because even now the Rebellion barely achieves the status of thorn-in-the-side.
Ordinary Imperial forces may not be big bads capable of wiping out a Rebel cell single handed, but they can destroy them through a steady stream of small defeats. Save the larger than life enemies for the big screen.

Despite what we've seen of a few backwater planets' piss poor staff, Imperial personnel are is not the Keystone Cops. A bucket of crabs, yes, but with more competent and ruthless crabs than not.

Well first of all, this show is TV-Y7

Secondly, it's had no trouble keeping people(even outside of the age group it targets) interested for 3 seasons. I see no reason that people suddenly will lose interest.

Disney doesn't care about this show's ratings, Disney only cares about the profit that can be made off of the toys it sells. The only reason it's on XD was because they tried to get people to buy their premium channel. It used to be simulcast on the main Disney channel, then they quit doing it.

Damn, I was so hyped for this season when they showed the trailer, but now I don't know what to think about it. Most of the episodes are painfully average, so many hyped up things from the trailers turned out to be disappointments, YT-2400, Dark Troopers, Ezra's Dark Side, Wedge, Saw, Bendu has been forgotten, Maul was a mistake, his episodes were boring and driven only by Ezra's retardation, Thrawn... eh, let's hope the finale is good.

Just watched the episode. It was good, but too goddamn short. It should have been a double length episode.
Much more Maul/Obi-wan interaction, much longer fight scene. Ezra just fucked off in seconds, seemed very out of character of him not to stay and help in some way. And when he returned, that would have been the perfect time for Kanan to give a speech about how important it is for jedi to realize they can't save everyone and that sometimes you must choose the fights that matter in the long run.

Rushed. It all felt rushed.

The finale can make up for a lot.

I liked season 3 a lot more than season 2. That was a real stinker, it had a good beginning and a good end, but everything in between was terrible. Season 3 is a lot more balanced.

It's also stupid that suddenly Ezra knows he saw Tatooine in his vision, unless I'm forgetting something the last time we've heard about it the Ghost crew was convinced looking for a planet with two suns would be retarded because of how many of those there are in the Galaxy.

You could cut Ezra from this episode and you will lose nothing. Maul will find Kenobi through some Force magic or just make his stumble upon him.

He found himself like 2 kilometers from Kenobi's house anyway. It wouldn't be more stupid that calling Ezra from the other side of the Galaxy (seriously, look at the map), waiting for him, hoping that some bullshit magic guides him to a part of the holocron, then hoping sand people will blow up his ship and not kill him, then waiting till he almost dies of retardation so that Kenobi can find him through another bullshit magic, because that's what Kenobi was doing on Tatooine, scanning the planet in case some lost Jedi was dying in the desert instead of watching over Luke.

Mauls death is supposed to be a mirror of Qui-Gons. When he's dying he tells Obi-wan to train Anakin, who he says is the chosen one. When Maul dies he talks about the chosen one as well, but his context is what Kenobi is protecting. Luke.

Was Ezra as smart as Maul, figuring that Kenobi isn't hiding, but protecting something/ someone? Or does he have some other dumb reason he doesn't say anything?

Why do people assume Thrawn will die? It's silly. There's a ton of things they can do to write him out of the show temporarily or permanently, why would they kill him off when they just brought him back?
