>>89846563>How?See pic related. To summarize, a tripcode is like your signature.
You generate one by typing the following text
nickname#password
into the "Name" field in the reply box. I did it for this post as an example.
The nickname will show up as you've written it, but the text after the # sign will not. The text after the # sign will instead be transformed into some jumbled text, which is your tripcode. (The # sign also turns into a ! sign.)
The tripcode is created in such a way that it's impossible to reverse the transformation process to find out the password used to create it. So only you can generate that tripcode text.
People can't impersonate you unless they know (or can guess) your password. In this way, your tripcode acts as a signature that lets people know a post was made by you.
It also allows people to search for you in the archives. For example, my tripcode will show up as !9jPA5pCF9c (I used the simple password "testing"). So if I want to find posts with that tripcode, I can search the archives with
http://desuarchive.org/_/search/tripcode/!9jPA5pCF9c/to find all posts with that tripcode. As you can see, many people have used this tripcode before, as the password is simple.
Using a tripcode allows fans of your work to find your posts.
