It could be argued that spending money on something that doesn't give you a clear benefit (he'll still make comics without your money) is dumb.
On the other hand, if it's money you can afford to part with, I don't see anything wrong with spending it to encourage the creation of something you enjoy, even if it isn't in a direct "give money, receive product" way.
