Because in my opinion both him and Catwoman seem to be if we go by what's in the comic. I understand that Batman isn't outright looking for excuses to kill himself like some reckless sob, but he does seem to see the "bat" as a form of death. As if he killed his old self and now being Batman is a form suicide. He's now a dead man. Some ghost.
But despite doing that his existential pain didn't go away, of course, because he's still technically alive. Being Batman and believing his dead or whatever is just his coping mechanism. That and fooling around with Catwoman, because when they're together he doesn't feel so shitty anymore about being alive.
That's what i took from the run. If i'm wrong in my reading, well... what does King wanted to convey then? Why all the talks about killing himself and being dead and constant suffering and kissing the pain away with Catwoman?
So yeah, my take from this is that they're both suicidal.
