It's neither great nor terrible. The music is fun, it feels like a big, bombastic, Meatloaf-style rock opera send up. The hook is really catchy, too. The visuals for the scene are silly but whatever, it's a kids movie, it's not like they'd just blatantly show someone selling his soul to satan in what was easily the scariest image a young me had ever seen. The lyrics as a whole are pretty fucking bad and the singing is lousy.

It's a fucked up combination of bland and memorable.

Yeah, one of the bigger problems with that movies is the inconsistent tone. It's got some great source material and you can see in parts where they embraced the fucked up nature of the whole thing, but then they have dancing bugs and a comedy sidekick for the villain.

It's like a less good Hunchback of Notre Dame. Watch the first 8 minutes of that movie (seriously it's like exactly to the 8 minute mark) and tell me that, if the movie had continued like that, it wouldn't be considered the best Disney movie ever made. But no, less than two minutes later, Jason Alexander makes a fart joke, and it's all down hill from there.

That's neat but I can see why it was dropped. Doesn't really fit in with the movie. The movie hadn't really touched upon greed as a theme and the song was a lot darker than the rest of the film.

Both songs also butcher the message of the original books anyway.

I can only assume from the deleted songs that the overall theme of the Lorax remake was originally meant to be greediness and substituting Stuff (TM) for actual valuable things in life. It shows up in the original demo cut of the opening song too.

One of my biggest problems with this is that the vocals are much too upbeat for the actual song itself. If they had changed the vocals, by making them more somber or less comical it could be a great song. For example, at the 4:00 mark it shows what could have made it great.

Not really. It's actually very traditional musical. Like, so traditional it's basically severely outdated now. Kind of like how filmmaking has changed from 60 years ago, same thing with musicals. This shit is basically 1700's tier of old, where character's were literally just sing-speaking while telling a story and rhyme wasn't nearly as important as it is now.

Over the years we've integrated more and more "pop" into modern day musicals to the point where Let It Go is basically a Katy Perry song, sung by a beautfiul white blonde girl in a gorgeous dress no less.

OK, that makes sense. But surely the topic of the poem means that different forms may be useful? I'd argue that a poem that is describing the chaos of war, just to take one example, would have legitimate reason not to stick to traditional metrical and rhyming form.

Theatricality that's in line with the villain's actual style. I think the best villains are always a little dramatic and boastful or fucked up, and that needs to be in their song, so when they do their song, it feels like a character thing and not an exposition thing.

But a song that exists merely for the villain to explain their evil plan IN SONG FORM! just doesn't do it for me.

I dunno.
SU's instrumentals are generally pretty great IMO. But their vocal songs generally just suck. They lack any good hook to them, and the ones that do manage a good hook have really uninspired lyrics.

Like probably my favorite lyrical song in SU was pearl's song in that musical episode where shes basically sad that shes never gonna be with Rose. The musical hook was pretty good. But the lyrics were ultra repetitive and not very interesting.

I think they just need to hire a lyricist to do lyrics for whoever is doing their instrumentals.

Home on the Range and Brother Bear were both pretty much made purely because Eisner saw how much money The Lion King earned and demanded more talking animal pictures.

Brother Bear was mildly successful and Home on the Range nailed the coffin shut on 2D theatrical animation after Treasure Planet strangled it and threw it in.

As was said, it has to fit into the villain's style and personality as well as being just generally sound musically. For me, it's also good if it ramps up the threat/intensity level of a villain compared to their previous appearances. So Hellfire brings you from "Frollo's a little off" to "wow this dude is nuts"; Friends on The Other Side brings you from "two-bit conman with a few magic tricks" to "actual powerful force of darkness to be reckoned with" and so on.
