The problem is the timeframe the movie focuses on isn't a great one. Its kind of like having a whole movie dedicated to Bilbo and the Dwarves lost in the forest with only passing context on why they went in, and ending it at the barrels. It starts without a lot of context, and when you place so much importance on something that would normally be a footnote in the story (I'd compare the pig to Bombur losing his memories after falling into the river) then you're left hanging going "What the fuck was so important about that?"
Black Cauldron is a snapshot of a part of a saga. But either you'd have needed a LOT more exposition or crammed much more in to make it work. As it is they chopped it down quite a bit before release.
