I agree that there needs to be a lot less demonizing of "the other".
I'm from a crazy liberal family, but I'm more moderate with left leaning.
I love hearing from the other side and trying to understand their mindset.
During my time in college in Philadelphia, we had a mandatory term of co-op work.
Only place I could get was a non-profit in west Philly that taught acting and the bible.
My mom thought I was crazy for wanting to do it, but after meeting with the white, highly religious man who ran it and his highly religious latino wife, I found it to be the most welcoming and interesting offer.
Some days I just spent discussing his ideology. I loved hearing about why he started the program, and how he really wanted to get parents involved in it with their children.
Then he started talking about the gay agenda and how they're trying to take over.
I didn't huff out or cut things off there. I actually found myself asking him more about why he thought the way he did and what compromises there could be.
>"So, what if a person truly believes in god with all their might and goes about spreading his message and everything, yet they also truly find themselves in love, not lust, with another of the same gender?">"Well I think they're misguided then.">"Well what if they never were 're-guided'? Do they go to hell?">"They'd be judged for their sins just as any other christian. If they were truly just misguided and didn't harbor that evil willingly, then god can be forgiving"Shit was fun as fuck and educational at the same time. I don't think I changed his mind on anything, but I do think we both got more of an understanding of each other.
