The priest says god exists because he believes in it, sure... but also because, if people don't believe it, he is out of a job.
btw, I worked in lobby and that's what we did all the time for the EU commission :
We financed a study, looked at the results, didn't have it published if the results weren't the way we wished or tailored the presentation if the results were in favor of the projet.
Of course, the moment you finance such thing, the people actually doing the research are going to know which way the guy paying their salaries want the findings to lean.
And since they want you to doll more money in the future, they'll make sure to make you happy if they can since they know that :
A) their work won't even get published if it's not to your liking
B) if their work get published, it is going to be advertized a certain way for politicians and common people .
All organizations are doing it, be it for animals, climates, health, businesses...
