But the messenger and text prompt tie in with the Adventure Game gimmick, hence MSPAdventures

I dunno, I think it was a good way to do the credits, gave us full pics even with bits of dialogue, and from the perspective of the characters. It gives a peek into what became of the character's lives in an up close and personal way, which is what people want out of a credits roll. Half the comic's story was told through the kids instant messages with each other so it's pretty fitting

The instagram was bad though

We may be putting too much stock into just how bad things are for John, but Hussie made a point to show that no one remembered his 19th birthday until last minute, and no one noticed his 20th at all.

Things like John never appearing outside after Rose's wedding or having any major non-birthday interactions can be explained away as just not being shown, and the more somber tone nrar the end as just being bitter sweet rememberence, but Hussie specifically chose to show John's birthday being forgotten.

Dirk, Terezi, and Dave is confusing and it's a shame Spades was killed but their use of time travel wasn't too nonsensical.

See that's the thing though, that's why Dave wasn't able to figure out how fucked up it all was until he spent years thinking about it and being with friends. I don't think Bro was unfeeling either but it came out in a way that completely lacked any warmth and was more self absorbed than anything. I mean the glasses and the turntables were like him trying to rub his own personality off on Dave, it's like he was trying to make a mini-bro, almost like another splinter. It's like how Dirk genuinely does care about his friends but has the potential to disapear up his own ass if he doesn't keep himself in check

I don't think it was completely played for laughs even in the beginning though, it was clear how unnerved Dave was by Bro's puppets and creepy ninja shit, and watching his flailing body get thrown around by an adult until he was a beaten mess at the end of it was kinda fucked up. Especially with how afterwards he messaged John "Bro just kicked my ass, that's all there is to say on the matter", which is what Dave would say when he was feeling the opposite of ok. It was layers of comedy on top of actual fucked up shit, which is what most of homestuck was honestly. But by the end of the comic I guess Hussie figured Dave needed to have a real talk about it without any irony or jokes covering things up

It's not their fault he's stuck in the past.

John has no agency. Everything he did in the comic was because someone else told him to, and now that he has nobody telling him what to do he's lost. He never had any personal dreams or motivations beyond "play game with friends, be hero somehow"

Friendship was always his top concern and now his friends are drifting away because they have lives. It's going to be really sad when he tries to get the gang back together to fight caliborn, tearing them away from everything they have only to get half of them sucked into a juju and leaving the rest of them broken

Most of the "horrible-ness" stems from his inability to function in a "normal" setting.

His friends are all happy and productive. John meanwhile is a hikikomori with no life or job.

In a way, it could be considered the human equivalent to Vriska's tormenting and backstabbing attitude. It's even pointed out she's a bit of an outcast as far as trolls are concerned and would do better if she was human. She lives in a world of fantasy as well, and like John suffers from a distinct lack of empathy.

By them being horrible people, what I meant to say is they're both autists and couldn't be capable of forming a truly functional relationship with anyone who didn't completely "get" them. Vriska slaps Tavros around because she loves him. John doesn't really give a fuck about most things, least of all a person's feelings.

They would fit together because, in the end, their personalities have kept them from forming any other relationships or strengthening them. All they've ever really done is stunted their friendships without realizing it. They're more appropriate for each other than you'd think.

Still, let me amend this: you can become PASSABLE at both, as in, learn how to get to the 'you're good enough' level. You'll never be great in either unless you have some natural inclination towards the stuff, as learning and practice can only get you so far.
