You're correct in that in some less extreme cases of GID people get over it as they mature, and for many reasons some people just never transition and live with the dysphoria.
But if it's severe enough that you really do have to transition, you're never really going to just "get over it." You can find a middle ground, I have. I've come to terms with the parts of me I can't change and try to focus on the things I have changed. But they still bother me, they always will.
I'll never be shorter, I'll never have a vagina, I'll never be a mother. My shoulders will never be more narrow and I'll never be shorter.
You learn to live with dysphoria and function despite it, but it's never gone and it's never cured.
