>>87024832>>87024578For the last full year of data we have (which is a better measure, as going by a financial year is how everybody else works - that's why it's a financial year), Time Warner (including New Line) was indeed the studio with the highest revenue; but the studio with the highest profit in 2015 was Disney, by a wide margin, despite Ant-Man failing to set the world on fire and Tomorrowland bombing. In part this was due to The Force Awakens being such a runaway hit, but it's also a pattern that carries over from 2014 (and beyond).
Profits don't just come from new releases: about 60% of a major studio's income is from back catalog stuff each year - movies and tv shows that may be decades old but still sell, either as home media of whatever type, or in merchandising, or in terms of sales to broadcast networks for the right to broadcast them.
The main Disney brand is so strong that even in a weak year movie-wise they're unlikely to fail to make a profit - they have that many good timeless movies in their catalog that they're always making money from them.
As far as new releases go, the amount of profit they make on the year of release is usually half their gross (the other half is eaten by the distributors, who basically run empty, air-conditioned barns 90% of the time), minus their marketing and production budgets, minus any gross points the producers, director, cast etc may have owed to them (often in lieu of up-front fees), plus almost 90% of the home video gross, plus any first-run rights from broadcasters (which will usually be the biggest such payments the movie can expect to receive over its lifetime). It is not an exaggeration to say this is usually surprisingly low. With a big, bloated budget - you can pretty much make a movie unprofitable for years afterward too, so keep an eye out for this in March and you'll have some idea what BvS actually did for WB.
