Why did Treasure Planet fail so hard, /co/?

I just watched it yesterday and I thought it was very good, the animation was alright and the plot made sense

What went wrong?

What does X-Games stuff mean?

The robot was annoying but he was crucial to the story, I don't think he could've ruined the whole movie

It's basically TItan A.E. made 2 years later and that flopped too. So did the Final Fantasy movie that came out aroudn the same time.
Those failures basically showed there's very little audience for non-comedy feature-length animation aimed specifically at male teenagers.

2D film animation industry was dying at those times for some reason, senpai
Iron Giant, Treasure Planet, Titan AE, etc we're all pretty great but didnt sell much
3D was taking over

The visual design was great, the rest wasn't. The plot and writing were literally just treasure island, they didn't put any interesting spin of their own on it at all except to add dumb mascot characters that clearly even the production staff themselves didn't like, and make the captain a woman. The pacing was tiresome, like it was just a dull plod down the list of treasure island plot points while occasionally stopping to wank over their own animation budget.

It was a movie that felt like the concept artist was the only one who put any passion into their job.

I emphasize with this dude. I always found characters with robotic multitool limbs to be the coolest shit in fiction. I hope he finishes his degree and goes on to make cool multitool cyborg arms for civilian use.

Atlantis wasn't the best-written movie either. All the visual stuff, the design and animation and backgrounds and all, those were a treat, but the writing and story weren't very interesting overall.

Disney had made a string of shitty over-hyped 2D movies and audiences were sick of seeing them. They believed Treasure Planet was just another one in the long downward trend. A cheesy sci fi version of the old Treasure Island standard seemed just another gimmick like the others.

Imagine if Pixar released a movie called Trains! about silly anthropomorphic trains and all the funny train-related puns that they told. With lots of fart jokes in the trailer. Would you go out and see it? Now imagine if it turned out to be really good. There's your Treasure Planet.
