The internet IS a part of real life. People are pretty much required to have online presence, e-mail, profiles on linkedin or work email or whatnot, social media profiles can be used in the assessment on who to hire etc. Especially for anyone working in media or design or entertainment or communications etc the internet is an integral, central part of their real life and work identity.
Saying "just log off" or "just walk away from the screen" is pretty much the same as saying "just never open any mail ever again" or "just don't have a phone" or "just never go to that workplace / school again" or "just change your name and address", in many cases.
