We have this really cool concept, fusion, which is introduced as a way to become more powerful, fueled by characters being attracted to each other (Pearl/Rose, Ruby/Sapphire, Lapis/Jasper) to the point where the giant monster Malachite becomes super lame when it's revealed to just be one big metaphor for abusive relationships.
We have a great arc involving Jasper getting corrupted and revealing how Pink Diamond died preceeded by Jasper on her knees begging Lapis to be with her.
We have Peridot attempting to fit in with the Gems and having some funny moments of their clashing personalities oh but whooooppsss let's throw in some seductive Garnet trying to fuse with her and ship-teasing between her and Amy.
We have Pearl attempting to fit in with humans in the latest episode with potential for tons of hilarious fish out of water humor completely thrown out the window in exchange for her chasing after a giant Rose-look-a-like to fuel her lesbian lust.
The show could be really funny, cute, and adeventurous if it wanted to, as evident but a lot of cool scenes like Peridot standing up to Yellow Diamond, the Rubies arc, all of Bubbled, any scene spent on the Moon, but it for some reason thinks lesbian relationships are on the same level of DRAMA and EXCITEMENT as incoming alien invasion.
I like SU only when it's about a kid on a magical adventure, not the episodes that serve as a soapbox for the artists to teach us about relationships.
